You can't tell me that we don't use twice as much energy in the dead of Summer running air conditioners here in Texas than we do running heat for an unusually cold snap. If anything would tax our grid it is the 100 plus degrees day after day in the summer. We've never had blackouts in the summer here.

Something else is going on, IMHO.

Plus- think about all of the schools and businesses that are closed today. There should be less load on the system.

There have been 8 outages at my house so far today. Now (knock wood) the power has been on for over 30 mins so hopefully they are done with our neighborhood. I am not betting on it though!
 Quoting: IllumiNaughty

Ouch. They said on the news we're to expect this for the rest of the day and even tomorrow.
 Quoting: Uggs

About the time I hit Enter the damn power went out again. This time it was only for a few minutes. I had a day of baking planned :(

No doubt that our power load should not be an issue just because it got cold.

Strangley enough here at my house in South Austin I haven't lost power once. I am in a residential area no where near a hospital or downtown, but I hear the street lights are out all around here, but not a flicker here.

So, I'm kinda stumped as to why my service hasn't been interrupted if this is a systematiac process.

Not complaining, of course, but find it very curious.

I don't uderstand how you can run all the airconditioners in the state in summer and still export power, but have blackouts now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1215280

Someone else said this -- and I heard my husband repeat it just now. He thinks that this is a dry run to 'test' the system and see how everything performs and how far they can push us. Similar to the swine flu pandemic/ test they pulled last year.

Or, they have to take down power stations for maintenance and considering our high use is during the summer, the winter is ideal to do so.

A spokes person for the public utilities commission "Terry Hadly" doing an interview on ABC is saying that although he does not have the exact figure, the number of plants that went down this morning was in the double digits , and he has no idea how or why.

I find this very odd.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said late this morning that a broken pipe and a frozen pipe at two Central Texas electric generating plants helped trigger a statewide power emergency that forced rolling blackouts in Austin and across Texas.
Dewhurst said problems at the Luminant-owned Oak Grove plant east of Temple and the Sandow plant near Rockdale apparently were caused by a winter storm that has dropped temperatures to below freezing across the state, and stalled activity in some parts of North Texas with blizzard-like conditions.

Re: Rolling blackouts ordered for Texas - prepare your stuff
There was an article on the Chron or somewhere stating that the blackouts are caused by a couple of coal power plants that had their cooling pipes freeze/burst. The plants that back them up were having trouble due to low pressure caused by the cold. So they are doing rolling blackouts for ~330,000 people at time to keep the operational plants from being over loaded.

Mine was out between 8:45 and 9:15. Not bad, but I'm pissed because I was planning on slow-cooking a chicken in the crock pot today. Can't do that if I don't know when the powers actually gonna be on.

Edit: Fort Worth, by the way.

So far still haven't lost power in my neighborhood but I suspect that is due to the zip code next to ours being out for 5 hours!
I hope when they get around to us it won't be that long!

Geeze you people don't know shit about Texas.
This is not the norm, it due to the extreme weather.

We usually don't have weather this cold for this long.
The homes and businesses weren't built for this weather.
So, it's takes more energy than usual to heat.

I don't know about you,
but My electric bill never goes over $250-$300
bucks in the summer. I live in a house that was built in 83, it's not as efficient as I would like.

My A/C runs constantly during the summer.
I have electric heat, as do a lot of people here.
My bill has went as high as $600.00 bucks in Dec of 2006, Imagine the load on the grid with that kind of drawl...

That being said:
You are correct,

"AUSTIN - Burst water pipes at two coal-fired power plants forced them to shut down, triggering rolling power cuts across the state, the lieutenant governor said Wednesday.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said this is something that "should not happen."

Dewhurst said he was told that water pipes at two plants, Oak Grove and Sand Hill, forced them to cut electricity production. Natural gas power plants that should have provided back up had difficulty starting due to low pressure in the supply lines, also caused by the cold weather.

The lieutenant governor said the demand placed on the Texas grid was nowhere near peak capacity. He said he was frustrated by the situation."

hardly a conspiracy.
someone just forgot to let the water run a little...

I'm at a Starbucks in Austin because our power keeps going on and off. It first started at 6:05am and was off for about thirty minutes and came back. Then went off again. So me and my girlfreind started keeping track of the times and counted the minutes. And basically it has a pattern of being on for 5 - 15 minutes and off for 30 - 45 minutes. We were able to get a rough estimate on when we each could take a shower and cook food. But, the Internet stoped working after the third blackout. So we are here. We have had about 8 blackouts and when we left the power was on and when we get back I'm sure it will be off again.
