Last night while driving home in Nashville, I saw a convoy of about 12 cherry picker utility trucks heading north... my thought was these were headed north to help out with powerlines up north, dunno

I was under the impression that most places in the states use natural gas or heating oil for their heat.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1227257

Yes, but most heaters require electric to run or to click on. The good thing Is that you can still light a gas oven and stove for heat.

Do you like Prescott? I looked into it but online it looked like home prices were very high. True?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1209397

I moved here from an island in Florida took awhile to get used to being a mile high. But I love it here, the people are awesome; for the most part the weather is great.
The home prices are high but we don't have a lot of crime. I am sure the gun laws has something to do with it. lol
I rented a small cabin for $500 a month. My electric bill was $25 last month. Overall it's less expensive then Florida.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1251106

Yes, Prescott is a pretty cool place. However, it's best not to say so, as we have enough people moving here already.

Woke up this am, no power, got to 32 last night. Power came back on, turned on the news, they're claiming SRP, our local power company is initiating the rolling b/o's due to something in the NE of the state, could be cold, could be wind.

I'm not shitting you, they're actually saying they're having issues due to the cold. Give me a f'n break, I've lived here for 16 years and it gets cold at night during winter, I smell bs. Trying to get a link.

Not all, west coast and sw use electric or gas fired heat.

It is possible it snowed up north but it does all the time, that's the issue I'm trying to make. Wonder if SRP is selling to other colder states at a higher rate. Also it's not all that cold here in Mesa so no chance of dying, it's now 35.
 Quoting: It's hot here

Ok. Yeah I said gas. But I didn't know they used electric. I imagine electricity is used only where they have hydro-power plants because natural gas or heating oil is cheaper.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1227257

We've got hydro all over the state, APS the other power company has the largest nuclear plant in the US. The funny thing is, the coal fired plants they're referencing are either in the 4 corners area or on the NM border. So I'm going with they're selling power to colder states at a higher rate.

I'm just confused now, I highly doubt we're using more power than they can create cause of the cold. Please remember, it doesn't get that cold here at night, compared to other places. But we'll have 5mos of 100+ heat over 3/4's of the state and usually, never a hiccup so I call total bs on their answer. I'm thinking the same for TX.

You have friggin' Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station nearby, with 3 1000MW reactors as I recall. (Maybe one of those got decommissioned? That would still leave two.) There should be a few kilowatts that you could borrow from LA to avert blackouts.

Just wondering but I know a lot of the reservoirs with hydro power are sitting at low levels from the ongoing drought. If it gets cold enough to freeze, maybe that affects power generation? I doubt the facilities were designed to handle long periods of freezing temperatures. Maybe they had to shut down some power generation.

This could also be due to global warming.

This is odd. So they do a "rolling blackout" during the night when power usage is at a minimum, but then at 8am when companies are going fulll blast they end them?

How does this make any sense? Guess I'll have to ring my SRP contacts, except they're on the water side (SRP = Salt River Project, originally they were a water utility not electric, that came after the dams were built in the early 1900s).

They are SO stupid. Just plug it in...won't blow the grids and no fuel needed to create all that extra power...lol
 Quoting: weegie

I saw this coming when they first started pushing those stupid-looking little rollerskate electric cars.

In Oregon, (as I'm sure in other states too) they depend on gasoline taxes for road maintenance etc. Well, some Gov't pencil-pusher has figured out that if people are using electric, they aren't using gas. So guess what? They are gonna start using mileage meters or mileage reporting in order to GET THOSE GAS TAXES!!! They are saying somewhere between $80 and $150 per year for the "average" user (whatever the heck THAT means!).

So let's see...$40,000 for the car, plus the cost of electricity to re-charge it, plus $5000 for a new battery when the old one poops out after two or three years, plus an additional "gas-tax" charge = a little rolling death-trap that only the uber-rich can afford! So, guess I'll hang onto my 1989 Volvo which gets 25 mpg, is paid for, and is SAFE in an accident!

Oh, and I read awhile back that when these electric cars ARE involved in an accident, they are EXTREMELY dangerous for the rescue workers because they can explode.

Back on subject, please bundle up and stay warm and safe.

It must be the Northern half of the state. I'm setting here in Southern Cochise County and we've had no power outages.

Today is predicted to be 34*f/9*f,,, ya I know I was raised in Ohio and that could seem like a spring day to some. But take into consideration it was near 80*f on Sunday.
