| freebyrd User ID: 1194106 02/03/2011 12:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had been doing a long term temp assignment since July 2010 and did an outstanding job. When I was contacted by the agency in July they told me there was a high probability that if I was successful in the position it would go full time. Quoting: SpazzI did an outstanding job for this company and received numerous compliments from my boss, clients and other upper management about how "outstanding" I was, complimenting my performance, work ethic, punctuality, etc. I was never sick, was a key holder and completely reliable. It was a very demanding position in an office that was incredibly busy, so busy in fact they expanded and added another floor in the building so I was running back and forth (client services) at a mad pace throughout the time I was there. I set up the offices on the second floor singlehandedly as well and received accolades for it. I was covering for a person who went out early with pregnancy complications until she had her child. Upon her return, I remained as the business was booming. My boss managed to work an additional position into the budget and get it approved so there was the slated full time, permanent position, however it was approved to begin in Feb 2011. I was told I had to apply for the job like any person would, through their website. The position was opened internally first with a week deadline and after that it was posted on the job sites on the internet. My temporary assignment ended the second week of January 2011 and I applied after the internal applicant deadline has passed as no one had applied within the company for a transfer. Last week I had a telephone interview with the HR dept, submitted everything that was necessary and requested. Lots of brass had recommended my employment including several part owners of the company. Then... nothing... until my boss (a caucasian woman) wrote me an email yesterday telling me they had hired someone else, a person with a latino/mexican name. I was shocked. There is not one person in HR who is white and they make the decisions for employment. My boss told me she was "sorry." I am unsure what to think at this point in time. I had performed "stellar" in my duties and was totally loyal and reliable, never sick once, so many positive things about my performance. THey even called me back to work two days a week after my assigment had ended because of someone had taken two vacation days and they just happened to be the the two busiest days of the month. Don't want to type a book, but I am curious as to what you all think about this. Is white the new minority? I feel I have been discriminated against no doubt, I was already doing the job for so long and so well for them. My bosses boss was black and she didn't seem to want to get to know me, just had me do things like call cabs for her, etc. She worked out of the same office as HR. There was already a "minority" in our office who was a Malcom X follower and it seemed that she had a sister type relationship with the boss of my boss. I am not racist and have always been that way. I just cannot believe I was encouraged to apply for this position, basically lead to believe the technicality to apply was what exactly that, the position was basically created to add me to the office and HR (offsite office in another state) proceeded to hire a non white person after I had been working it for so long and so well for them. Where I am is still the worst in the US for jobs so this isn't a time I can easily just find another position. I am rather devastated. THanks for your input. Peace. Spazz maybe its time to rethink this position and i am only half joking, even if you don't harbor racist views realize that many many other people do, even if its on an unconscious level, the world of a Caucasian person, and yes i am one myself has vastly changed, we are experiencing more an more unfair hiring and promotion discrimination practice's, and the thing is whether the person above you is a minority and even if they were never exposed to the kind of racist hiring practices that you were, in their mind society has convinced them that its ok to stick it to the white man, because after all we were "keeping them down" for decades right? at least thats what society, the media, popular culture, and all the other influences that help form our opinions has convinced them of, but one thing that minority families have learned in the american experience that white families have not is the ability to "stick together' and to help each other out, nepotism is an unheard of concept and has no meaning in their lives or culture, so if you do get in a position where you are in control of the fate of another persons livelihood, remember this experience, and when you are deciding who to hire for a position and the applicants are a black man and a white man, and the black man is better qualified but the white man isn't quite as qualified but can perform the duties that the position requires..... well, remember, W.W.J.D., (what would juan do, or what would jerome do) and act accordingly, good luck....and now for a disclaimer ========================================================= all of the above remarks are for entertainment purpose's only and do not reflect the true feelings or beliefs of the author of the post ![]() |

Doesn't apply here as much as you would like it to because I was already doing the job for over 6 months as a temporary contract worker. I was told to apply as a technicality and in the end it didnt matter. The "Minority" got the job. Oh and they are paying for their relocation expenses. If your argument fits then they shouldn't have hired me as a temp inthe first place and keep calling me back to work after my assignment was up. I think it is just plain cruel. My name is gaelic, I am mixed, in fact I am half Roma but there is no box to mark on any EEOC forms for that. I look white though. HR are the people that created the last minute exceptions. They already interviewed me and then hired someone they have to relocate and pay their expenses when I am local. Trust me, there are lots of other details that make this just plain wrong. |

No come on, I am not that shallow, I bought a house in Oakland in the 80s and lived in a depressed neighborhood for over ten years and went to college there, I don't play the white man is better scenario. I have friends of all colors and orientations and that is who I am intrinsically. I am not trying to play a better than scenario, this really happened to me and I am just trying to get other opinions objectively, albiet I was a little leary of asking due to certain posters. I appreciate all your input but the truth of the matter is I was doing the job and was told in writing and verbally I was perfect for it by my boss but the hiring people in HR, all minorities, made the decision to hire a Gonzalez for a position my boss worked hard to add to the roster because of my qualifications, performance, work ethic, etc. She wanted me to work there because of what I did, not the color of my skin. |
