Oh I better go with FreeBird...only because it was my theme song at 16, and I have the TAT to prove it.
But I LOVE me some Zep too! I like Battle of Evermore better than Stairway~

SHR: GREAT song, GREAT lyrics!

if Freebird ends up winning this it will be a stunning upset. Like a number 8 seed knocking out a number 1.

Zepplin's stairway is awesome, but you gotta give it up for the Van Zant's... Freebird was so iconic that even in the 90's it was our class song.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1078715

You make a good and succinct case for Freebird, but Stariway To Heaven is a real masterpiece and even though it lacks the universal subject appeal that Freebird definitely has, Led Zeppelin wins going away.
 Quoting: HL Shancken

To me simple man is more of a match to stair way...
I will admit that Stair Way had such an impact on rock that 90% of all beginning guitarists learn this song first, followed by smoke on the water.

Well, Simple Man is a great song, too, but Freebird is the right Skynard song to go up against the mighty Zep. Simple Man I would have go head-to-head with, say, Angie of the Rolling Stones.

For your consideration guys:

BATTLE OF EVERMORE

Robert Plant:
The Queen of Light took her bow
And then she turned to go
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom
And walked the night alone

Sandy Denny:
Oh, dance in the dark of night
Sing to the morning light

Robert Plant:
The dark Lord rides in force tonight
And time will tell us all

Sandy Denny:
Oh, throw down your plow and hoe
Rest not to lock your homes

Robert Plant:
Side by side we wait the might
Of the darkest of them all

I hear the horses' thunder
Down in the valley below
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon
Waiting for the eastern glow

The apples of the valley hold
The seeds of happiness
The ground is rich from tender care
Repay, do not forget, no, no

Sandy Denny:
Dance in the dark of night
Sing to the morning light

Robert Plant:
The apples turn to brown and black
The tyrant's face is red

Sandy Denny:
Oh, war is the common cry
Pick up you swords and fly

Robert Plant:
The sky is filled with good and bad
That mortals never know

Oh, well, the night is long
The beads of time pass slow
Tired eyes on the sunrise
Waiting for the eastern glow

The pain of war cannot exceed
The woe of aftermath
The drums will shake the castle wall
The ring wraiths ride in black
Ride on

Sandy Denny:
Sing as you raise your bow
Shoot straighter than before

Robert Plant:
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold

Sandy Denny:
Oh dance in the dark of night
Sing to the morning light

Robert Plant:
The magic runes are writ in gold
To bring the balance back
Bring it back

At last the sun is shining
The clouds of blue roll by
With flames from the dragon of darkness
The sunlight blinds his eyes

Zep over Skynard any day, but in this battle of tunes, I have to go with Freebird, though if you made me listen to either right now, I'd probably hurl.

Stairway to Heaven scared the shit out of me as a kid, so yeah, Freebird.

Glad they don't really have 10 min long songs on the radio anymore.....I think that was what Hotel California was really about LMAO

If you are going to pick the greatest song of all time, Why pick two of the most overated songs in history.

Im doing a write in vote:
I give you ELVIS singing Neil Diamond.
How can anything be greater than this?

I finally managed to get it to post. That song is right up there with Freebird if you ask me, and in fact I judge it hghier. I was at that Cobo Hall show in that video. Actually it could have been filmed on another night for all I know, since he played practically every night for a week when he came to town.)

How do you like this for a rock anthem?
