[ link to www.spaceweather.com] MARTIAN VOLCANOES: Olympus Mons towers a staggering 24 km (78,000 ft.) above the plains of Mars, and its base is more than 500 km in diameter. This makes it the biggest volcano in the solar system. It´s so big, in fact, you can see it from Earth. In Buffalo, New York, using a 10-inch telescope, Alan Friedman snapped this picture of Olympus Mons and three other martian volcanoes on July 31st: For many years, astronomers believed Olympus Mons was dormant, but there´s mounting evidence that it might be active. Maybe some day backyard astronomers will photograph not only the volcano, but also its eruptions. |
