Despite retreats, Egypt regime's core stands firm

CAIRO – Egypt's regime has offered a string of concessions in the face of the strongest threat yet to its rule, but so far nothing that uproots its entrenched monopoly on power.

The power elite has ruled for six decades, backed by a constitution it wrote, state media it controls and millions of Egyptians who depend on its patronage. In the face of a popular uprising, it has shown dogged resilience in what opponents say is a campaign to break anti-government protests and preserve the regime's authority after President Hosni Mubarak leaves the stage.

Egypt unrest: anti-Mubarak protesters seek new resolve

Protesters on Cairo's central Tahrir Square have called for a new push to oust Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, two weeks into their campaign.

Thousands of people still occupy the square but their lines have been gradually pushed back by the army, keen to get traffic moving again.

Talks have achieved little and Mr Mubarak appears unlikely to resign

Egypt protesters tell of beatings while in custody

Reporting from Cairo —
The young lawyer sat in a cafe, burn marks on his hands, purple and yellow bruises hidden under the legs of his jeans. He knows he might be followed, but he doesn't care. He says that telling his story might be the only way to protect himself.

Mohamed Badr is among dozens of middle-class Egyptians, many of them never in trouble before, who were picked up by the state security apparatus after their country erupted in protest against President Hosni Mubarak.

Mubarak fights Egyptian protest with pay rise

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak tried to buy time in the face of defiant street protests, pledging to raise public sector wages by 15 percent and ordering a probe into recent deadly violence.

The 82-year-old leader met his new-look cabinet for the first time on Monday as the regime battled to get the economy moving despite ongoing demonstrations by pro-democracy activists occupying a Cairo square since January 25.

Journalist Ahmed Mahmoud was shot as he filmed the clashes between protesters and riot police from his Cairo office.

Ahmed Mohammed Mahmoud was like any other journalist, his wife Enas Abdel-Alim, says. When he saw something important happening, he rushed to cover it.

And that's just what he did on January 29, when he heard a commotion outside his office in central Cairo's Lazoghly square, just next door to the country's interior ministry.

Mahmoud watched as riot police fired tear gas canisters at protesters and brutally beat them.

Egypt's Suleiman Gains Clout While Shunning Talk of Presidency

Egypt’s Vice President Omar Suleiman will meet local media chiefs today after the government vowed to allow more press freedom in a bid to convince protesters it’s serious about moving toward democracy.

The talks, reported by state-run Middle East News Agency, come as opposition supporters prepare for another rally to demand the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. Many gathering in Cairo’s Tahrir Square today said they have been inspired by Google Inc. executive Wael Ghonim, who was released yesterday a week after being abducted during a protest. Local and foreign journalists were also among those attacked and jailed when Mubarak supporters clashed with protesters last week.

The shaping of a New World Order

Whether Islamist or secularist, any government of "of the people" will turn against the neoliberal economic policies that have enriched regional elites while forcing half or more of the population to live below the $2 per day poverty line. They will refuse to follow the US or Europe's lead in the war on terror if it means the continued large scale presence of foreign troops on the region's soil. They will no longer turn a blind eye, or even support, Israel's occupation and siege across the Occupied Palestinian territories. They will most likely shirk from spending a huge percentage of their national income on bloated militaries and weapons systems that serve to enrich western defence companies and prop up autocratic governments, rather than bringing stability and peace to their countries - and the region as a whole.
