Canned food moving back to pop-tops?
I was at the grocery story tonight, and saw that they were having a great deal on name brand canned veggies, with a sale price of 60% off retail. It was actually a significantly better deal than a case of the same veggies would cost me at Costco. So I picked up a couple of bags worth.

The odd thing that I noticed when I was putting the cans in my basket, was the pop-tops. Pop-tops? Who the heck uses pop-tops any more, (besides high end soups)? For as long as I can remember, over 80%, if not more of canned goods needed a can opener to open. Why are our nations canned goods now moving to pop-tops all of a sudden?

The first thing DOOM scenario that popped into my head, was that it seems like they are making it easier for people to get the cans open, if there was a power outage in order to eat.

I am NOT claiming this is all canned goods. However I went through isle after isle, and it seems like so many companies are going with the pop-tops. Soups, juices, baby formulas, tuna, etc.

Are pop-tops easier and/or cheaper to produce? Are TPTB prepping for a a power outage like what I described above?

Check your pantries, and report back here if you are seeing the same thing on your end.

Am I reading too much into this? Who knows, only time will tell.

I agree with on that, but if that is the case (consumer convenience), I ask why the industry even moved away from pop-tops in the first place.

Well I have been snowed in before in the mountains for 6 days, with no power, and no can opener. Luckily I had other non canned, non perishable to turn to. Again, its just a thought. Who knows. Just found it interesting.

Its because those corporate fascists at the can-opener corporations stopped paying the other corporate fascists at the canned goods corporations.

not sure why but the pop top cans do not last as long as a 'regular' can - just sayin

They are going to pop tops because can openers will be hard to find after the apocalypse.

The variety of canned good that now have pop tops but did not have a poptop style can lid before is indeed increasing.

Spam cans had the strip and key opening mechanism.

Then, soda pop cans were made with pop tops (spam cans too now have pop tops).

Now tuna is in resealable pouches as well as cans. Some tuna cans have pop tops.

However, I also have pop top style cans of fruit, jalapenos, soup (lots of soup), beef broth, chicken broth (some broth is in cartons), pork and beans, mushroom pieces, french fried onions, and dog food, etc.

I caught myself wondering just yesterday why my jalapenos (packed in Mexico) were in a more convenient pop top style can while my sliced carrots (packed in the U.S.) were in a can I had to use a can opener on.

Good observation, OP.
