I know, I know, people are going to say it's always been in that position--

like a "smile"-- but I don't buy that. I showed some of my littler kids, but I

didn't say anything, just showed it to them. Each of them said, "Why is the moon

upside down"? Out of the mouths of babes.

BTW---I'm in Florida. Saw the moon last night @ 10:30 pm.

Perfect "smile" crescent--- with both tips pointing up.

It may have something to do with what the closed down NASA is doing to the moon. They shot it supposedly looking for water on the moon. Then more recently they are doing something they say is looking at the dark side of the moon.

Keep in mind that the Muslim worship of a demon that lives on the moon. Then the Obama administration gave NASA orders that their focus should be establishing good will to Muslims. Strange messaging. What does out reach to Muslims have to do with NASA. Unless we connect the moon shot dots?

Up here in the northeast and I was just telling office people the same thing!! Lived at my place 20 plus years and have seen the moon how many times??? Never seen a smile! WTF?? Even the image before a movie or after shows a kid fishing off the point of the moon...not swimming in it like it is a bowl!!!wtf

You need to be more observant... it's called a cheshire moon or wet moon. Happens every winter.

From your article:
The period where this is most common, January 20 - February 18,

This is only supposed to happen in the Winter. And the only other place this happens is at the Equator during the year. So why then was this captured in April in North Carolina:

IMAGE ( [link to i62.photobucket.com] )

We were partying out back the night that image was taken back in April.

I have had more than a few people that I know mention that moon is not right. My cousin just said something two days ago actually.

I am getting quite tired of idiots saying maybe we should pay more attention.. The problem is that YOU are not paying attention. Those of us who observe the sky on a regular basis know when something is not right! And I have watched the sky nearly every night for the past 35+ years.

I am in NC...pretty avid skywatcher...definitely some weird things going on around here, especially with an increase in chemtrails. The weather is very unusual for this time of year, live a couple hundred miles inland and we've had seagulls all over the place in the last few days...weird.

I also noticed the moon looked odd last night.

I've noticed a lot of odd things going on with weather/animals recently as well as noticing how the moon does look different. Its a feeling you get, that somethings just "off" or "not right about it". With many people around the world feeling this and experiencing it on a collective level, it shows that something is happening whether they can prove it or not. Yes, internet increases awareness and "subliminal" convincing of seeing something different...but across the board on various websites people are coming to find answers and see if others feel the same way...Mother Earth has started awakening...its actually all pretty exciting :)

I saw this on NYE this year in Hawaii and freaked out, but brushed it off as due to latitude, unfortunately I'm back in Texas and it's still upside down. I agree with rest of the folks, I'm 39 years old and an avid sky gazer, never noticed or saw this before. Must be due to earth or moons orbit, but strangely noticeable!!

Re: ???? Anyone notice the UPSIDE DOWN MOON last night ?????
I saw this last year and so many others said they had never seen it before either. My daughter said she had only seen it in a Japanese anime, "Sailor Moon" before then. I guess the anime called it that because it looks rather like a boat. Can't say if the Japanese had seen it before we did, or if it was a fantasy.
Yes it is like that again this year! And funny that it is mentioned as a "Chesire Cat" because when I saw it tonight, it had clouds or shadows for a while...I was trying to figure out what caused it to look like it had eyes...and "Chesire Cat" came to mind!
Odd is all I can say. Some people just tend to look all of the time, and when its not what we saw for so many years before, we tend to ask others. I don't think we are crazy, things are just different in some ways.

I noticed it last night as well. A lot of people here seem to say it's a natural part of the moons transits thru the seasons...however...why has there NEVER been ANY images of that kind of moon in our collective northern hemisphere consciousness? why does everyone look at it and think -odd?

sommin aint right, and we all know it...but collectively we don't seem to be bright enough to know why, pretty sad

The moon is getting lower and lower.

On its next orbit it may crash into the Midwest, possibly Kentucky.

It's a wet moon and typically like that in the winter because the earth is tilted away from the sun.

If it is still a horizontal crescent in the summer we know we have a problem.

It could be too bad for a lot of states. The moon is round, and once it hits Kentucky with a giant WHUMP! it may bounce once or twice, figure Missouri and Kansas, and then roll on west until it splashes into the Pacific, creating a historic slosh that will douche the ring of fire.

I did notice tonight though that it was in an odd position. Farther north than usual, usually when it sets where I live, it sets farther south. Eh, could be nothing though. I do work outside 5 days a week, from day to night, so i look up ALOT!

Re: ???? Anyone notice the UPSIDE DOWN MOON last night ?????
Now we're getting resurrected threads from a year ago.

How many times does this have to be explained????

It's normal, but it seems that people are only now paying attention to the moon because of all the threads on GLP about it.

It's called "field rotation" (look it up).

Think of it like this - if the moon's due south of you, and in a "half moon phase", then the terminator (line between shadow and lit halves) is pretty much vertical. It runs from the moon's north pole to its south pole. It also lines up roughly with the earth's north-south axis, which also lines up with you facing south, and north behind you.

Now, if you look east, as the moon rises, then north is to your left, and south to your right. The moon is still lined up with the north-south axis, so the terminator line can be nearly horizontal.

The same happens as you watch it set in the west. North is now to your right, and south to your left, so again the terminator is horizontal, and it lines up with the earth's axis.

The same applies to all the other moon phases, so you get rotated crescent moons, gibbous moons etc. Look up "wet moon", "dry moon", cheshire moon" - there are lots of references and images.

It's not the moon that's rotated - it's you!!

Another thing to think about - when you see it, rotated one way or the other, or due south and straight, somebody, somewhere else in the world is seeing it in a different orientation. It's the same moon, so if different people see it in different ways, it must be to do with their positions on the earth, not something the moon is doing (otherwise everyone would see it the same way at the same time).

This has been written about in lots of cultures, all the way from the ancient egyptians over 4,000 years ago through Shakespeare and into modern books. In fact, even 50 years ago people wouldn't have given it a second though because they saw the moon regularly and were used to seeing these effects. Unfortunately people hardly ever look at the skies nowadays (even though the moon is easily visible in light polluted cities) so all knowledge about how things move in the skies is being lost.

It's a shame really, as the skies are fascinating to watch, even if you don't get deeply into astronomy. There's always something to look at if people would only take the time and learn about it, instead of assuming something they haven't noticed before is "wrong"...
