WTF??? Is the earth really spinning or not?
So I am talking to this guy and he says the earth isn't moving. The thing that bothers me is that his info well presented and seemingly well thought out.

A couple of things he says has me wondering:

1> If the earth is rotating at approx. 1,000mph at the equator, hence the 24 hour day, then why does it take same amount of time to fly from Washington D.C. to L.A. as it does to fly from L.A. to Washington D.C.? The flight from D.C. to L.A. should shorter due to the surface rotating beneath a plane cruising at 50,000ft.

2> If one leaves Buffalo, NY on a flight to Miami, why does the Pilot not have to head a course into the Atlantic? Miami would have moved east at least 2,000 miles due to the earth's rotation if 2 hours had elapsed.

3> Why would 30mph winds make clouds appear to move east if the earth is rotating toward the east so quickly? Would not the clouds have to be traveling 30mph faster than the rotation of the earth?

4> On a windless day a cloud can seemingly stay in one spot for a longtime. If we're are rotating this fast wouldn't all the clouds seem to move rapidly (always to the west)? Same goes for Chemtrails.

3> Schools mention and teach Copernicus' theory of heliocentricity, but make no mention of Tycho Brahe's theory of geocentricity, yet Tycho was by far the more brilliant and accomplished astronomer?

5> To revolve around the Sun once a year on 93 million mile radius, the earth would have to be traveling at 67,000mph while simultaneously spinning around at 1,000mph? 67,000mph is like 30 times faster than a rifle bullet.

Now I am not a physicist, nor am I an idiot. I have never really taken the time to question what I was taught concerning the rotation and revolution of the earth. Yet, as I consider this, I can help but wonder have we been deceived about this as well.

Also, have any you ever looked into geosynchronous satellite orbit? It is hard to believe that with the documented fluctuations of the poles and rotational speed of the earth that these satellites are able to stay synchronized 100% of the time.

Exactly. So is it really spinning? If it were you would, right?

BTW, relativity is a theory as well.

5 seconds isn't very long. Plus, if the earth is spinning you would be traveling at the same rate of speed until an outside force, gravity, acted upon you. So if you could jump 50,000ft for say 10min, would you still land in the same spot?

No, this has been tested and has been proven, fire a gun straight into the air on a windless day and the bullet will fall west of the shooters position by a couple hundred yards.

coriolis effect...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1260673

That is the point due to the Coriolis effect Miami would have rotated over 2000 miles to the East. That would put the plane over the Pacific Ocean, just off the west coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Yet, in reality, the flight arrives in Miami on time and without the pilot having to adjust for the rotation of the earth. Is the reason that the pilot does not have to adjust for the rotation of the earth because the earth is not rotating?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1261440

Things that are on the earth, or bound to the earth (like the atmosphere)have a motion that is imparted because of the speed of the rotation of the earth, because we are moving with the earth. Relative to us, the surface isnt moving, however.

Think of it this way. You are driving down the road, going at 50 MPH. You throw a ball out of the window. Relative to you, the ball is moving at the speed you threw it, lets say 20 MPH. However, to someone standing still on the side of the highway, the ball is moving at 70MPH, because the car from which you threw it is also moving relative to him, but it is not to you.

This explains questions 1 - 4

the SECOND 3 - It doesnt matter who is more brilliant, but whose idea is actually supported by evidence. The person doesnt matter, just the validity of the idea. And we have SO MUCH evidence that the earth is orbiting the sun, along with 7 other planets (or 8 if you still take pluto as a planet).

The satellites have a very specific altitude and, therefore, a specific orbital velocity that they must maintain in order to stay stationary relative to the earth. The velocity is right around 6900MPH, and the altitude is right around 22,000 miles up. In order to maintain this orbit, the satellites in this orbit have small adjustment rockets that correct their speed and altitude.

Re: WTF??? Is the earth really spinning or not?
Wow, GLP really showed me why i should not believe any conspiracy theories any more.

You really have to check every point of conspiracy argumentation, because obviously most conspiracy theorists left school after 4 years. Its the unbelievable amount of stupidity here that I cant get.

If you live on a rotation planet, you need to rotate with the planet, there is no other way. But you only feel it if the earth would stop now.
And of course the gas in our atmosphere is also rotating with the earth. And of course you rotate faster on the equator than when you are closer to the poles. Thats why air, that comes from north of the equator, that flows direction equator needs to turn slightly east (north-east passat).

I dont know what you did at school, in my country this is basic education you are taught in the 10th class...

Not excluded, I mean they may differ.

Here's an example. Lets say you are about to get in a plane and fly east from a westward city. You take off with a speed of 300mph + 1000mph earths spin. If an observer were hovering above you and not effected by the speed of the earth, he would see the eastern moving away at 1000 mph, and he would see your plane moving at 1300mph. The city is 300 miles away, you would arrive in 1 hour.

You've made some great points. I always felt the explanations using relativity were unconvincing.

The guy you were talking to is correct in saying the earth is not rotating.Tycho Brahe's model is the most correct, from what I and other scientists can tell. The Ancient Chinese, Greeks, and Arabs all believed in a geocentric system.

The heliocentric system was one of the biggest frauds perpetrated by the Enlightenment movement. Also, to believe in the heliocentric system, you must also believe that the moon doesn't travel East to West, as is seen, but West to East!

Why are traveling times equal rather we fly east to west or vice versa? The east to west flights would have to be significantly shorter.
