Well from his voice--just his voice, he sounds depressed. So, maybe the pills are to combat that and allow him to still be able to read the teleprompter.

The chemical crap they give people for depresion I beleve leads to problems down the road healthwise. Such as cancers (aka Ted Kennedy), or alzhimers, etc...

I'm from the school of if someone is depressed, they need to drink alcohol. That is what bars are for. Then let em sleep it off. Worked for generations, and probably still works without all those chemicals.
