Rant: Games, Movies, Ratings and Government
A couple of points...

First off, I heard a little while ago about some 80 year old grandmother who was pissed about buying San Andreas for her grandson. Now I understand grandma doesnīt understand what she was buying, but itīs rated M for mature, and is not intended for people under 17. She read the title fine, Iīm sure she could read the warning. Iīll bet she wouldnīt buy a movie rated NC-17 for her grandson.

Second, the general marketing of game companies is geared towards males aged 18 to 25. Everyone is so concerned about the children, well they arenīt intended for children, so parents shouldnīt buy them the games.

Third, if a kid goes and buys the game himself, the store sells the game without checking his age. The ratings arenīt enforced anyway, so whatīs the point?

Here in PA, the cops use kids to bust stores that sell tobacco to minors. They send them in and tell the kid to buy a pack of smokes, if they sell to them, the cops bust the store and they get fined. Thatīs the same thing they should do with games. There are ratings for a reason, enforce them.

Iīm an adult, and I own SA. Why shouldnīt I be able to play a game in the future thatīs intended for adults, just because they donīt enforce the rating system? Will they take away our R rated movies too, because some grandmother was pissed about taking her grandson to see Striptease?

Ok, Iīm done.

Re: Rant: Games, Movies, Ratings and Government
What bugs me the most is that this same shit has been going on for years. The new GTA SA thing is just that, new.

Parents are irresponsible and pawn off their responsibilites to industries that are, of course, trying to make a buck.

I went to see Good Morning Vietnam when I was a kid. My grandma too my cousin and I there and said it was ok for us to go in. The movie really wasnīt a big deal and surely didnīt scar me for life. Course then again, my Grandma knew what the movie was about and wasnīt just giving me a free pass to any R rater movie.

Itīs just bullshit conservativism trying to manipulate culture and society to their standards. They canīt even live the lives they try to pass off on other people.

Thanks 215.

defiler,

Yeah, your right, about it just being new. I mean, maybe 10(?) years ago, I played the original gta. That top down peice of crap that was fun as hell. And they even complained about that. I also own gta3 and VC. Now I agree that Rockstar has continued to push the envelope farther and farther each time. But itīs intended for adults, not kids.

And itīs not just parents pawning off there responsiblities on the game companies. It seems like everyone in society is continually blaming everyone but themselves for their problems. Parents blaming games. Teachers blaming rap music. Fat people blaming McDonalds, etc... Itīs all bull.

Grandma wouldnīt walk into a porno shop and buy little Johnny "Girls Gone Wild", but sheīll buy him a game thatīs rated M or AO.

Hereīs another point - the "sex scene" (although youīd hardly call it that) can only be unlocked by using a patch which has to be downloaded and deliberately added to the game.

Shouldnīt the people creating or using these patches be sued or charged under the digital media laws? Seems to me theyīre maybe breaking the copyright on the game, or something similar.

And did this 14 year old kid whoīs grandmother is making a fuss download the patch too?

I blame the parents for being stupid morons and I also blame the little stupid morons for being little stupid morons and trying to reinact a game they should have never played in the first place. Otherwise that GTA is the shit.

-----------------------------------------------

Wow,

what will the cop do next?

That reminds me of a story that happen in California, not sure where.

The police were investigating a slaves trade between US and Mexico. They Planted some microphone in one of the brothel to see what was realy going on. They heard a "forced prostitute" in distress. Well, she died.

The police uses kids to do their job. That is a new low. The cops just have to stand in front of the cig store in a unmarked car and wait a few minutes to do the deed, but no, lets use a children officer Barbrady! They are so willing to help people with guns, maybe that will encourage them to use tactics like ours to deceive others in the future.

Dam i hate this world, i hate it hate it hate it.

I donīt have a problem with them using kids. Iīm pretty sure the kids get some money for doing it. It helps keep the stores straight.

I got carded all the time up until about 2 years ago. And I always asked why? Theyīd always tell me how they couldnīt afford a $300 dollar fine, so they card everybody.

The system worked, it did what it was supposed to do. Protect the kids. And the same would work for games.

yeah it sucks, I shave and get IDīd everywhere, cigs, alcochol blah blah IDīd WHAM. I just give it to īem before they ask, that way they canīt blame me if they get in trouble for not asking. Most places are getting lazy and not even reading it, they got them stupid card scanners and scan it and it tells them iīm old enuf. Which is stupid because this year in colorado they changed the IDīs, everyone under 21 is vertical, everyone over 21 is horizontal. Can tell at a quick glance. But when I donīt shave I never get IDīd. amazing what a little facial hair can do.

when i was buying cigs at 16, when the clerk was asking me my id, i was staring at him with a perplexed glare. I was then telling him that i did not have my id but that i was 22 years old.
Then i was saying "thanks for the compliment i guess" Can i get back to what i was doing now?"

And voila!

Making people feel bad always do the trick. What a pityful world are we in?

AC 76, yeah Iīd do that too. Just lay it on the counter before they even ask.

And I still get carded when I go for a case of beer. But after you go 2 or 3 times they remember your face and donīt ask anymore. But I still lay it on the counter, they just hand it back and say I remember you.

But, the point is, it works. There is no reason they should go after adult games because the same system would work for games as it does for tobacco, movies, and porn.

And i am glad it worked, i hope they dont have to make kids lie anymore to make their job properly.

And GTA fuckin rocks!

You know they ramble about the killing of officer in that game. The fact is that if you want to do the game properly and well, you dont have to kill cops. You kill some but proportionaly to the number of people you hit while driving your car.

LOL, WeTFoot.

I remember when I was about 16 and everywhere I went, theyīd card me and tell me to go to hell.

But there was this one gas station... Iīd go in and theyīd ask for ID and I would give them my license and he would just hand it right back and give me my smokes. I guess he figured if you had the balls to actually hand him an ID, you must be of age.

How about this.

If a parent sees his kids with violent game or movie unsuitable for their age, why cant they go see the owner of the store that accomplished the deed and give him shit? In front of the clientele?

And if that dont work, if the people still rent from him, then you got your answer. Take out the stupid rating code, no ones gives a fuck anyway.

When i was a kid, i had no attraction to vilent game, id rather race my frineds in a game of mario cart or something similar.

Kids, pffff, what do they know?

WeTFoot,

"If a parent sees his kids with violent game or movie unsuitable for their age, why cant they go see the owner of the store that accomplished the deed and give him shit?"

Well, because money talks and shit walks.

The ratings work for movies, they wonīt let a kid into an R rated film. Nor should they let a kid buy and M rated game.

Donīt get me wrong, I agree with you for the most part. All Iīm saying is that the politicians want to take them away from īeverybodyī to save the children. Thatīs bull. Keep kids away from it, adults can make their own decisions on what they want to play/see and what they donīt.

Itīs possible to be very selective when you choose games or movies for your kids, but I donīt have time to sit around watching every show on television to determine whatīs suitable for them or not. Iīve witnessed more than 30 years of cultural imperialism and itīs not possible to not get brainwashed to some extent. I guess the best thing you can do for your children is to teach them the reasons and machinery behind all kinds of mindless crap on TV... to let them see through it themselves...my kids have become very observant, we spotted an upside down USAF star on a gov jet in the psy-op series 24...

WeTFoot,

Actually thatīs not true, atleast in PA. The clerk who sells the tobacco gets the fine. Not the store. So, yeah, they REALLY care if they get fined. Thatīs like a weeks pay for a pack of smokes.
