Rant: Games, Movies, Ratings and Government

A couple of points...

First off, I heard a little while ago about some 80 year old grandmother who was pissed about buying San Andreas for her grandson. Now I understand grandma doesn´t understand what she was buying, but it´s rated M for mature, and is not intended for people under 17. She read the title fine, I´m sure she could read the warning. I´ll bet she wouldn´t buy a movie rated NC-17 for her grandson.

Second, the general marketing of game companies is geared towards males aged 18 to 25. Everyone is so concerned about the children, well they aren´t intended for children, so parents shouldn´t buy them the games.

Third, if a kid goes and buys the game himself, the store sells the game without checking his age. The ratings aren´t enforced anyway, so what´s the point?

Here in PA, the cops use kids to bust stores that sell tobacco to minors. They send them in and tell the kid to buy a pack of smokes, if they sell to them, the cops bust the store and they get fined. That´s the same thing they should do with games. There are ratings for a reason, enforce them.

I´m an adult, and I own SA. Why shouldn´t I be able to play a game in the future that´s intended for adults, just because they don´t enforce the rating system? Will they take away our R rated movies too, because some grandmother was pissed about taking her grandson to see Striptease?
