Here's my theory on aliens. They are our future selves. It is possible that in the future we will discover time travel and be able to come back in time to visit ourselves. In which case they (we) wouldn't want to interfere on the happenings of this time. That's why aliens don't just come out and show themselves to us. They are us coming back to observe themselves in the past.
