Well I hope you have an antivirus and spyware scanner.. You might wanna hit those first. After that, defragment your hard drive. I dunno the commands for winXP anymore, but I could find em for ya.

Last ditch effort is spin rite. You throw it on a floppy, boot from floppy, and let it rewrite your data. It can work wonders.

Try hitting either F8 or F12 (can´t remember) during the boot-up -- this will bring up a prompt asking you if you want to boot Windows to ´safe mode´. Accept that option and see what happens.

I´ll have to check out spin rite. Never heard of it.

I run ad-aware every time I log off the net. And my anti virus runs everytime I boot.

Upon rereading your post, Puck.. I´d say grab spin rite and run that. It´s gonna take some time but it remagnetizes the hard drive and makes the data more readable. I don´t know if it´s free or not..but i´m sure you can find it. ;)

Well Spinrite is out. I don´t have XP and even if I did, I can´t pay for it right now.

They fucking charge for that shit.. It fits on one floppy.. Well I have it, never paid for it though.

you should update all your virus scanners first and addware spy ware scanners if you have already done this then check to see if your firewall is not locking you out some firewalls can lock you out of the sign on screen if your settings for laughing modifying or starting applications have to be manually set to not start properly so if you set it accidentally by hitting a wrong key not looking it can lock you out and if it persists you can use a drive Partitioning software and install windows on the new virtual drive and then cut and paste the window folder into your C: drive as a last resort. you could also back up everything to disk and format your drive and reinstall everything which is a pain in the ass

You don´t need XP to use it. Just the bootable floppy. I´d give it to ya but I dunno how "legal" that is.. I trust you can "pay" for it on your own.

ok when you reboot are you doing Ctrl + Alt + Del
everytime..

or are yo doing a hardware reset..
theres a hardware reset and then theres a software..

have ya turned the PC Off..and then restarted it?
when you were tryen all this?

I know at times i have to do a hardware rest (turn off completly) to get the hardware to work right..like network cards and modems ..

does sound like a hardrive / virus thing..

Ok, I´ve done both hard and soft boots. I´ve turned it completely off and let it set for atleast a minute to purge anything that may have been hanging around in memory.

I´m using Ad-aware as my spyware remover. I have Zone Alarm for my firewall. And AVG for my virus scanner.

Yea spinrite is pricey. It gets the job done though. Course I would never recommend anyone pay that much for it.

AC, normally that´s what I would do. I´d just reformat and reinstall my OS. I usually do that every few months anyway just to keep everything tip-top.

But that´s not an option right now, I dvd drive crapped out a few weeks ago and I´m still shopping for a new one.

I´d help ya more Puck.. but this isn´t the forum to do so. There may not be a "rule" about piracy, and the mods show that enough when they post music..but, i´m not willing to take the risk..
