Altered States: Ritual, Shamanic & Meditative Music Thread
Morning/Afternoon/Evening everybody!

There has previously been some discussion on this forum about how music can be used to achieve altered states of consciousness, helping us to connect with powerful energies which appear to wind within and without us simulataneously. This is a special interest of mine, inherited from my father who began collecting this kind of music in the 1950s.

Throughout history indigenous peoples from all over the world, and the great religions, have developed special types of ritualistic, shamanic and meditative music forms. This type of music has continued to evolve, with some of the more modern forms seen in clubs today.

I thought GLPers might find it interesting to explore these different forms of mind-tuning music, and welcome contributions to this thread. I am not so familiar with the more modern tribal and shamanistic genres, so please feel free to post your examples.

I will follow with a number of examples of music designed to lead listeners into trance and meditative states.

This is not short attention span stuff.

The nature of this music means that most tracks start very slowly, often with just a drone, with the more powerful rhythms following some minutes later... I appreciate that this takes time so if you see anything of interest, please feel free to bookmark for future reference.

Some of this is pretty powerful stuff.

I will start with 'Oya'(the fire spirit song), by the great Nigerian Djembe drummer, Michael 'Babatunde' Olatunji, from his 1960 album 'Drums of Passion', the first record I ever owned, and was one of the first 'World Music' recordings ever made. Olatunji was a great inspiration to many musicians of the 60s, including Ginger Baker and Carlos Santana. This is the finest example of drumming I have ever heard:

Followed by 'Salve Regina' the ancient Chant of the Templars, an early Byzantine chant which pre-dates the more modern Gregorian chants:

From the American rock metal band, Tool, who are modern masters of trance music. Their use of the Fibonacci sequence to induce trance-like states in their music is well documented.

Shamanistc throat singing can be found in Mongolia, Siberia and amongst the Inuit people. Trance states are induced through the use of controlled breath and dance, as well as the sound itself, during ceremonies.

Here's an example from Canada:

And a modern version from Mongolia, the haunting 'Gobi' performed by the Boerte Ensemble, which was part of the soundtrack of the film 'The Story of the Weeping Camel':

Hi. sorry you're having problems with youtube videos. I'm the least technical person on the planet, so the worst person to ask, really, but I sometimes have that problem if there's a lot of traffic on the net and my server doesn't have enough bandwidth. Try viewing again at a quieter time? That's part of the reason I'm posting this during what is a Sunday morning where I live.

An incredibly rare recording, taken from an album my father had. Taken directly from a scratchy LP - apologies for the sound quality.

This Gregorian chant - 'Salve Maria (Solemn) was performed in 1956 by the Trappist Monks of the Abbey of Gethsemene in Kentucky. At the end there is a call and answer and a bell tolls... it has an urgent quality, almost like a warning. Beautiful but unsettling.

Cool thread, OP. Inspired me to play Ambient 3- Days of Radiance from 1980 - Brian Eno with Laraji. Harmonic, rather than rhythmic, but very relaxing. With eyes closed in meditation, you hear melodies and rhythms within the harmonics. Peaceful and dreamy. It breathes.

This video is really excellent for a couple of reasons.

Perhaps I am making too much of this, but you can understand a bit about the Sufi mind by focusing some attention on the presence of the two dogs.
