Violent protests break out in Libya

Protesters have clashed with police and government supporters in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, reports say.

Demonstrators gathered in the early hours of Wednesday morning in front of police headquarters and chanted slogans against the "corrupt rulers of the country", Al Jazeera's sources said.

Police fired tear gas and violently dispersed protesters, the sources said without providing further details.

The online edition of Libya's privately-owned Quryna newspaper, which is based in Benghazi, said the protesters were armed with petrol bombs and threw stones.

According to the newspaper, 14 people were injured in the clashes, including three demonstrators and 10 security officials.

In a telephone interview with Al Jazeera, Idris Al-Mesmari, a Libyan novelist and writer, said that security officials in civilian clothes came and dispersed protesters by using tear gas, batons and hot water.

Al-Mesmari was arrested hours after the interview, unconfirmed reports say.

Hundreds of Libyans demand the government's ouster

Hundreds of Libyans calling for the government's ouster took to the streets Wednesday in the country's second-largest city as Egypt-inspired unrest spread to the country long ruled by Moammar Kadafi.

Ashur Shamis, a Libyan opposition activist in London, said the protests began Tuesday in the port city of Benghazi, with demonstrators chanting, "No God but Allah, Moammar is the enemy of Allah" and "Down, down to corruption and to the corrupt."

But police and armed government backers quickly clamped down on the protesters, firing rubber bullets, he said.

Is the Arab revolt spreading to Libya?

On June 29, 1996, the Libyan regime of Moammar al-Qaddafi put down a prison revolt with deadly force, killing as many as 1,200 detainees in cold blood with grenades and machine guns. Their bodies have never been found, and the Libyan government has never fully admitted the massacre at Abu Salim Prison, despite the best efforts of witnesses and human rights organizations to document it in grim detail.

Fifteen years later, relatives of the victims are still demanding justice. On Feb. 15, 2 days ahead of a planned nationwide day of protests, the Libyan regime arrested Fatih Tarbel, an advocate for the Abu Salim families -- sparking outraged demonstrations in the coastal city of Benghazi. The BBC says the crowd was about 2,000 people, and activists on Twitter claim that at least 2 people have died.

Anti-government protests hit Libya


Hundreds of Libyan protesters took to the streets Wednesday in the country's second largest city to demand the government's ouster in the first sign that the region's unrest has spread to the Arab nation in North Africa.

Witnesses say protesters in the port city of Benghazi chanted slogans demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi. The crowds, however, did not appear to direct their anger at Moammar Gadhafi, who has ruled the nation for more than 40 years.As in the uprisings that toppled longtime autocratic rulers in Egypt and Tunisia — on opposite sides of Libya — Libyan activists are using social networking websites like Facebook to call for a day of protests on Thursday.

Libya's official news agency did not carry any word of Wednesday's anti-government protests. It reported only that supporters of Gadhafi were demonstrating in the capital, Tripoli, and in Benghazi and other cities.

Libya: Protests 'rock city of Benghazi'

The reported unrest comes a day before planned anti-government demonstrations on Thursday, which are being organised via the internet.

Col Gaddafi, who has been in power since 1969, has suggested he might join the protests himself, the BBC's Jon Leyne reports.

Col Gaddafi has always insisted that the country is run by a series of peoples' committees, though most outside observers believe it is a police state with him firmly in control, our correspondent says.

He adds that although the Benghazi protest is a worrying sign for Col Gaddafi, it is unlikely that the regime will lose power tomorrow.

Anti-government protests spread to Libya

Hundreds of Libyans calling for the government's ouster clashed with security forces firing rubber bullets and water cannons early Wednesday in the country's second-largest city as Egypt-inspired unrest spread to the country long ruled by Moammar Gadhafi.

The protest in Benghazi was triggered by the arrest Tuesday of a Libyan activist but quickly took on an anti-government tone, witnesses and activists said. The protest was relatively small in size, but it signaled anti-government activists have been emboldened by the recent wave of uprisings.

Activists using Facebook and Twitter have called for nationwide demonstrations on Thursday to call for Gadhafi's ouster, a constitution and comprehensive political and economic reforms.

Libyans clash with police over detained lawyer, source says

Several people were arrested after police confronted the protesters, the source said.

But "there is nothing serious here," said a highly-placed Libyan source who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to the media. "These are just young people fighting each other."

The source said the clashes were "not political" and that "Libya is not Egypt... This is not an organized revolution."

There were demonstrations in support of long-time Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in several cities, including Benghazi, on Wednesday, the country's state news agency reported.

The highly-placed source characterized the clashes as "street fights" and said, "there is no police, no security in Benghazi."

CNN's independent source is not aware of further clashes in Benghazi Wednesday.

The source said the government mobilized thousands of people in several Libyan cities early Wednesday, and is conveying the message that while grievances will be addressed, calls for the regime's overthrow will not be tolerated.
