I like the challenge, it forces me to refine my techniques and develop skills I otherwise wouldn't bother developing. It also gives me a chance to educate those who want to learn. There's a lot of bad information out there, and sometimes it even leads people to harm themselves or at least ruin the lives of their families. There have even been instances where that information has come from amateur astronomers, as was the case with the Hale-Bopp "UFO." I believe amateurs who know better and have the knowledge to debunk such claims have a responsibility to present the truth when they see nonsense and lies masquerading as truth, particularly when it involves claims of "doom." Astronomy is poorly understood by much of today's modern society, and that makes people particularly vulnerable to fall for nonsense claims. Astronomy is a hobby that is best when it is shared, and this forum gives me a great way to share it. It's fun for me, I'm sorry you can't understand that, but your inability to understand it doesn't make my motives sinister.
