| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1272448 02/21/2011 04:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Comet Elenin is a minor comet with a nucleus about 200 yards across. It's closest approach will be about 14,000,000 miles from earth this fall. Unfortunately, Comet Elenin might not ever become naked eye visible due to its small size and great distance from earth. A brown dwarf between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars would be extremely bright in the night sky and would see be bright enough to be seen during the daytime. If a brown dwarf were to approach to 14,000,000 miles from us, its angular size would be almost as large as the sun: Sun: ~0.5 degrees Brown dwarf @ 14e6 miles (assuming a conservative diameter of 100e6 miles): ~0.4 degrees |

Quoting: DDanNo, that's a bit of crud on a film plate recorded about 20 years ago or more. That's from POSS2, which was a whole sky survey completed in the early 90's. Although that's close to Elenin's current coordinates (at least as of last week) that's nowhere near where it would have been in the sky that long ago, plus it would have been too dim to be seen that far back. ![]() |

Hi Astronut, basically your saying that the "aladin" site uses imaging from the 90's? Do you know the current coordinates and could you point me to a place on the internet that I could plug the data in there? I unfortunately do not have a telescope handy :-( Kind Regards, Dan |

Together they create the whole-sky survey I generally refer to as "POSS2" though really it's two surveys conducted with nearly-identical equipment at an observatory in the northern and one in the southern hemisphere (using the UK Schmidt Telescope in Australia). ![]() |

Quoting: Dumb_Blonde 1268534the 'coincidence' of this comet, coming out of nowhere - and from south of the ecliptic just a px is supposed - is waaay beyond belief. for those who've been studying about px for any length of time .. we understand what this thing really is .. A COVERUP. not looking to get into any pissing contest here. y'all believe what ya want to believe. but i've made up my mind already, and this is the real deal. Prepare whle theres still time left. You can always tell a SHILL by how many posts they make on things they don't believe in. |
