I still have to say, no matter WHAT is going on with the sun, it has never resulted in something I have noticed IRL. so if this is a HUGE deal, is there a way I will detect an effect somewhere outside my home? Will there be a news report about ANYTHING significant?

Or is this like reading about weather on Mars. Exciting if you're a martian, but otherwise, who cares?

Not that I'm anti-doom. Far from it. It's just that I never see anything interesting happening no matter what the sun does or doesn't do. KWIM?

NASA Issued Alert Data on CME and X Flare and other flares

Understanding that X flares are much stronger and faster than other flares and there were 10 C Flares along with a M flare before the X flare and CME happened. The X flare can/does catch up with the other flares, to where they can all hit at the same time.

NASA had issued and Alert with their estimated time of arrival. They had issued it for 2:57 UTC on the 17th with a + 6 hour confidence.

That time has come and gone.

So that means now the U.S - S. America - Canada will be sun facing today and will have the most impact if any impact from the CME.

Magnetosphere Stand off - is suppose to be 5.5 RE as the CME hits - from what NASA says - look at the graph above for what that means and how close the magnet field will come to the Earth in pressure.

So what is 0300 GMT in EST? Just so we can do another countdown and make ourselves even crazier as the day goes on.

i mean if this will take out radio coms, cause earth quakes, power outages, etc and this gives people time to prepare then by all means, promote the information. However, if all that happens is that the northern areas see the same northern lights and auras they normally see, then why is that crap pinned?

I wish I knew what the truth was. There are some people who say we have a weakened magnetosphere and these things are coming in one after another which further weakens it ready for the awful X cme one to run right over us all which would pretty much devastate everything. But then there are those who say no big deal, pretty lights, get on with your day...

That's my take on it.

At this point all we can really do is watch the data stream, then see for ourselves what happens as a result so we can at least have a benchmark to go from.. isn't there a matter of polarity as well? positive vs negative in the charge of the CME? if so would they have differing effects?

Thats correct if the storm has a N charge it will not be as strong as a S charged storm. Remember how magnets work?, a S charged storm will make a better connection with our magnetic field and cause a larger storm.
