NICT Magnetosphere Guide For Solar Watchers (service eneded)

hey ninz...so your take on the nict magnetic field diagram is that the earth is just repelling solar patricles at the moment? thats why one the north pole is showing an openness, and the south pole (red) is balled up...did i understand your initial post correctly?

right now, the Bz is high in the positive. it is balled up because the Bz and By are in the green (positive)
This means anything coming at us right now is way north bound and just bouncing off the magnetosphere
the solar winds are low and almost no density at all, so there really is not much to bounce off hehe

I'm going to keep bumping this today so that people stop with the threads saying how earth is free floating today and how the magnetosphere is collapsing in on its self

right now there is low density (low particles), a slow wind, and the BZ direction is north
this is ALL very good
it means we have slow winds hitting earth that have almost no particles in it at all and the winds are going north over earth and bouncing off!

when we see the magnetosphere simulation all wound in a ball like that, it means that its doing it's job.. protecting earth

Looking at the nict website atm and the there seems to be some pressure on the magnetoshpere nothing to high, however the magnetic feild line appear to be fairly open.

from the little information i have gleened from these very helpful pages im thinking that isnt the best arrangment to deflect incoming charged particles, also both bz and by are negative values.

this comes roughly 3 days after the fairly large CME we witnessed recently

any information on this primarily the negative bz and by values would be most appreciated

hey NIN when is the projected polar switch date? And are we sure the earths poles are reversing or is it the suns?

i wish there was a way to come up with an estimated date
could be tomorrow, or years from now
yes earths magnetic poles are indeed reversing and have been for years. it is very slow at 1st and speeds up the closer the poles get to each other
The sun also does a reversal each 11 years
so, the answer is both :)
