I never use white flour. I only use whole wheat flour. All my baking turns out good with whole wheat flour and it is better for you too. White flour is constipating. So is white rice.

I have a recipe similar to what the OP posted earlier, made with whole wheat flour, and it's delicious.
I put two tablespoons butter and 1/4 cup honey into one of those two cup glass measuring cups, already filled with 1 1/8 cup water heated. I use a thermometer to check, make sure it's 110 degrees, then put it in bread machine. Cover with 2 cups whole wheat, i cup bread flour, and 1 1/2 teaspoons yeast. I take the dough out and bake it in the oven, this is so good! After seeing OP's recipe, have been wondering if this can be made similarly with good results.

The real trick here is to knead as LITTLE as possible and I like to mix it at night and let rise til morning. Don't pound, knead or treat roughly! Try your recipe without the bread machine and post the results for us.

Good luck!

Okay, I'll try it soon. I'm out of a few ingredients right now. By the way, great thread, another five star.

Re: This bread recipe could be the difference between starving and eating in the times ahead.
My father was born in Canada so don't jump me. I haven't read the entire thread. My question : How long will yeast last? I have the large bricks of yeast I purchased at least 10 years ago ! Would the yeast still be active ? Can it go bad ? These are foil wrapped sealed bricks of yeast. Thanks in advance for your reply...
 Quoting: Black Diamond 1273228

I'm assuming this is the wet yeast so probably dead. Dry yeast lasts longer but in times of need look thru the thread for pulling yeast from the air.

Good read:

Are you using soft or hard wheat? Do you add gluten if you are using soft (pastry) wheat?
 Quoting: Karu

Works with both but so much more delicious with the hard wheat mix. I have never had to add gluten and would never do so. Not necessary.

Good luck!

My wife is the Gluten Free master in our house so I'll ask her to post some info on this as well. In the meantime, if anyone can jump in with some GF recipes, tips or tricks, I'm sure many will be pleased. After all, Celiacs will need bread too.

Grape yeast makes delicious bread. Google Poolish and Biga to research. I have had artisanal breads made from both and they were delicious.

I read recently, maybe on another thread here or maybe somewhere else, that wheat berries can be ground up in a makeshift mortar and pestle using a can and suitably shaped stick. Wheat berries would keep better than flour and be less messy to carry in an on-the-move situation.

It's my understanding that OP can ban/block/delete/likethat an unpleasant poster.

Looks like we got a smellfungus in here (look it up). If the shit does hit the fan, he'll be the guy knocking on OP's door asking for some of that bread.

P.S. I heard you can grow potatoes indoors in a barrel or a kiddie pool. Has anyone tried this?

Here's a grape yeast starter recipe that I found, haven't used it but it has two reviews, both very positive:

Almost anything can be grown indoors under the right conditions. I have done tomatoes and broccoli with hydroponics but tubers will require dirt. Pails and/or a kiddie pool will work as long as you can get the light. LOTS of light so probably not too practical unless you can do this. Just a guess.

Awesome recipe.

Can I use sour dough starter in place of yeast in this?
 Quoting: Khim

Have tried it with acceptable success. I would suggest to everyone to have that starter. It will last forever if treated right. I believe the oldest starter in America is about 200 yrs old now. Still used in San Fransisco.
 Quoting: Jude11

i've had a zip loc of starter in my freezer for 4 months. i've read it lasts a long time if kept frozen.

I am a professional baker and can tell you
...
mix yeast and salt into 3 cups warm water
 Quoting: Jude11

Stir flour, yeast and salt in a large mixing bowl.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1273042

I am no professional baker, but I known,
you better not mix the yeast with the salt.
Salt does inactivate the work of the yeast.

You better change the order of putting the ingredients.
First mix very well the yeast, the water and the flour.

Some do use two parts, raising one up for 3 to 4 hours.
The other part, they do append the salt. Then they box both.

Doing this, Your bread will be much better.

All the Best,

Thanks, I have tried both ways and had success with both as I leave a long rising time. Many people with experience will mix dry and wet separately but both work.

Good input.

Good vibes with this thread. The gift of bread is symbolic in it's kindness and the love of others.

Maybe not conspiracy or breaking doom, but the gift of bread in a time of need is perfect here.

Again, thank you!

Although it can be ok, many people have lost their starters doing this. I would suggest doing it but not all. Keep some out and don't risk it all at once.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
