Around here (mid sized urban area - middle of US) a 20 year teacher with just a BS/BA makes $85,000 - $95,000 depending upon the urban district BEFORE benefits (health insurance, retirement etc.) ... and that is for working 9 months a year AND with NO MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES AND UNION JOB PROTECTION!

That is MORE than the average attorney with 20 year experience makes for a 12 month year.

That is MORE than an average TENURED 20 yr professor makes at our very very large university.

That is MORE than many Emergency Room physicians make.

Remember ... this is with NO management responsibility, just a worker bee teacher.

I can't think of any other job in this part of the country where one with just a basic BS/BA degree and NO management responsibility can make that kind of money and still have excellent job security that is UNION protected.

Forget "starting" salaries ... most jobs pay shit when one is just starting in any field. Teachers around here make EXCELLENT money, particularly if one factors in all the time off they get.

First of all, the average national salary stats are from 2005- therefore outdated and therefore lower than they would be in 2010. Secondly, compare apples to apples, oranges to oranges. Salary only is compared - does not include additional compensation in benefits. And an average salary of 36,000 for women nationally in 2005 tells me that teachers (who earn in the higher incomes compared to working women in general) should be earning more than the average rate. Since they start their carries at a lower rate, and teachers with 20+ years and additional degrees earn a higher rate, an average of 56,000 in salary is really quite average considering you have new teachers at the lowest rate, and teachers who are close to retirement at probably $70,000. The average of 56,000 in WI is not too far off then. If there is a large population about to retire, then 56,000 would be a low average salary for teachers.
Then, in your argument, you compare these salary rates to national statistics. Nationally, women earn $20,000 a year less than men do with the same degree. Check out the same stats for men with bachelors degrees over age 25. They earn an average nationally of over 60,000 while women with the same degrees earn only 40,000. If teachers in WI earn an average of 56,000 in 2010 (compared to the 2005 statistics of 36,0000 in your wiki reference) then they are still earning 33% less than men with the same degrees now – look at the stats you posted.
Compensation – you can’t compare compensation unless you compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. Again, the national salary rates do not include compensation. So to say that WI teachers earn $100,000 is just not true. Take a minute to add up the value of your compensation packages. What does your employer contribute? How many sick days are you allowed? You can’t calculate that in for teachers but exclude it for all other occupations of a similar nature. Do teachers really have the best compensation packages? Look at private industry, look at politicians. Who gets million dollar bonuses? Who gets all remotely-related-expenses paid for?
You are focusing on the wrong group. Teachers, unionized workers including police and firefighters, are not the ones soaking the system. Look to your politicians. Look to private industry that makes millions in profits off of the debt they provide you. Look to the insurance industry. Com ‘on – don’t side with the politicians who want to take away the few rights and freedoms left to individuals. How can they dare take away these rights when they already make gross profits with the way things are now? Taking away more human rights only gives them more avenues to greater profits. Think. We need to unite. Don’t allow them to create more division among us. We are the only ones who will, in reality, help each other when the going gets tough.
Finally, I’d like to say that I’m a teacher – non-unionized in my state, although I have worked in a unionized school board. There is not a lot of difference between the unionized and non-unionized school boards, except that teachers have a direct say, a direct impact, on the negotiations for improvements/change in education. They use that power too often to negotiate on their own behalf, and in my opinion, need to use that power to negotiate on behalf of their students. But take away their ability to negotiate at all…. and no one wins.
