People see something on TV and suddenly they believe everything they see.


That show also ruins the market for those who were making a living that way for years.

YEAH the kids and the pillheads were in full force. Then there is me, the woman who is quiet and watching on the sidelines. YOu could not PAY me to haul that stuff they sold today. People are silly.

Yeah TV really did a diservice for these types of auctions in my opinion.

There are actually two storage auction shows. On on FX or Spike..then the other more popular one.

Guns and gold. They all think they will find great items in all units. It doesn't work that way. Guess where the majority of people got their stuff to put in the storage unit? Walmart. LOL. I mean, yeah there is good stuff from time to time. We had done this for fifteen or so years off and on. We went once after the show started. It was crazy. Two hundred or more, like OP said, stuff went very high. People driving by were yelling and honking, and even stopping to take pictures and wave at everyone.

Don't worry, in a few months they will all be in Alaska panning for gold, and ice road trucking. LOL

Some niche type of ways to make money like this should never be exposed to the masses. The sheer act of doing so ruins the whole niche market by flooding it with SHEEP buyers.

The funny part this time of year is that people are going to spend their tax returns to buy the junk belonging to people that wouldn't spend their own tax returns to save.

Like most things, it's all per-determined.

The site owners clue in their friends and family on which units to bid on.

Yes and no. Many of the places cut the locks right there. In theory they don't know what is in there either. However, obviously human nature as it is people talk to each other. Unit renters likely beg the manager to let them get out 'grandpas gun collection, coin collection, etc.' Also they drive their little carts around. They see what goes in units, and what comes out. Of course if you dump your stuff and never come back, they probably don't remember you or your stuff.

Some places cut locks the day of auction, but before bidders arrive. A few actually pull the stuff out or at least inventory it.

Keep in mind unit renters have until the auction to get their stuff back. If they pay up, and it has been gone through, they would not be happy.

Plus they can profile the type of person leasing. Is an evicted meth head or granny and paw paw headed for the nursing home.

THE GOOD STUFF IS ALWAYS TAKEN OUT BY EMPLOYEES FIRST.

THEN PUT ON A DIFFERENT LOCK.

Not true. They can't. Also many times a family member buys the stuff back. Trust me if that happened they would get caught.

Not saying it never ever happens. But it is not the norm. It is on the up and up.

It's bad karma to try to make a buck off of other folks misery, just like the vulture realtors trying to turn every short sale they can get their greasy little hands on.

The people who had those units probably lost their homes in foreclosure, and now when they can't pay the storage fee they lose everything else...........this doesn't end well for this country.

^^^^LOL....I laugh every time I see that gold-in-Alaska-garbage. They could have made a smaller hand/water operated machine(whatever it's called), to run the dirt through, but NO, they had to have a huge, expensive-to-run machine that doesn't even pay for itself. Greedy.

Never seen the TV show ... but have bought a couple of items at the local VOA auction and have gone to numerous estate auctions over the years and also purchased stuff there.

Key for a buyer is to go when the weather is crap and nobody shows up (or few show up) ... since then you are only bidding against the business people who are just going to resell it anyway and want a built in "profit margin" (ie: they are restrained in their bidding).

You really have to know the value of anything you are bidding on ... otherwise do NOT go!!

Not every auction is going to produce good deals, but for the ones that do you can get some GREAT deals. Just make sure that it is stuff you REALLY want and will REALLY use. Best overall deals I have seen? Mechanical equipment like cars, trucks, boats, rv's, tractors, farm implements, tools and shop power equipment.

Worst pricing at almost every auction anymore? So called "antiques" ... since you are ALWAYS going to be bidding against dealers for those items.

I couldn't read more than a few of the comments because its just sad. If your doing this for a living and can't see that all the weekend warriors spoiling your fun is just a temporary bump in the road, then wake up. I owned 2 storage facilities totaling over 2000 units in Maryland for 17 years. I was even bitter at first due to the inflated values the two shows are giving most items. It will not be long before these home owners trying to get rich quick get sick of paying $650 for a broken laptop and some mothball covered clothes.

What's sad is that a lot of this stuff getting auctioned off are the remnants of people's lives--people laid off, homeless and using PODS to hold onto their belongings until they can get a job and get back on their feet. They lose their PODS stuff when they can no longer pay the storage bill.

To go bidding on that stuff is wrong.
