Re: I just GOT BACK FROM A "PODS" STORAGE AUCTION IN KNOXVILLE JESUS CHRIST TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THE CRAP IT WAS
---Been to many auctions. Show is no diff really than my own experience. Except the show edits down 100 auctions into about 4. And the bidding prices are way too high. We've found plenty of treasures and the first rule about treasure hunting is NEVER tell a soul if you actually find anything.
---I see auctions everyday in our local paper. I go to the upper class parts of town.
---I have a friend who has opened over 10,000 lockers. He owns a second hand store where he easily turns what he finds. Now and then he blows everything out for $1.00 so he can make room for more inventory.
---Because of the TV show a 6 unit auction took 6 hours to finish due to the enormous crowd that had to all peer into each unit. I will wait until the dust settles and the bids return to normal.
---I've been to live auctions, silent auctions (which I don't like), and auctions where they drag out each item or box and bid live on each thing. One unit can take an hour or more. You grab your stuff as soon as you are high bidder on any item and make a pile. After awhile your pile becomes so big you wish you had a helper to keep an eye on your stuff or get it into your truck. You pay at the very end. Hopefully you didn't spend more than the cash you brought.
---After awhile you get a feel for what a locker might contain by the appearance of the way it is packed or some things you see. Many lockers are owned by people who have been evicted from their apartments and all their belongings came from the GoodWill. That locker is not for me. Another locker was an estate where a party died and someone, heir, agent, whoever moved their belongings into a storage unit temporarily. For some reason the rent was not paid. That locker is worth some serious attention. We have found dressers with all of grandma's underware in one drawer and her jewelry in another.
---I could go on and reveal many other clues...
---No one seems to mention the downside such as 1) rats, poop & urine stench, other vermin, appliance disposal fees (costs $50 to get rid of a refridge here), time, hard work, vehicle requirements for cleaning out a 10x20 or 20x30,time, cost of gas, storage until you can sell things, time, how to sell things...
---One needs many avenues of disposing things for profit such as recycle, consignment, Ebay, local ads, yard sales, swap meets, consignment auctions, local dealers, connections, contacts and so forth. and lots of time to do all of this...

Been there done that
Good Luck

The auctioneer from storage wars is the one who pitched the idea. Bigger turnouts and expensive purchases puts more commission in his pocket.

There are actually two storage auction shows. On on FX or Spike..then the other more popular one.

Guns and gold. They all think they will find great items in all units. It doesn't work that way. Guess where the majority of people got their stuff to put in the storage unit? Walmart. LOL. I mean, yeah there is good stuff from time to time. We had done this for fifteen or so years off and on. We went once after the show started. It was crazy. Two hundred or more, like OP said, stuff went very high. People driving by were yelling and honking, and even stopping to take pictures and wave at everyone.

Don't worry, in a few months they will all be in Alaska panning for gold, and ice road trucking. LOL

Can you really blame a person from wanting to make a buck, even if it is just $1, and half is junk. People are doing what ever they can to survive this economy. You must be able to make something at it or none of yo would have been there. Oh, Know what it is! They are taking from your profit. Don't worry it will calm down some day and that money will be back in your pocket.

People have to do what they can to make a living even if it means coming into you comfort zone.

Darryl from Storage Wars filed a lawsuit for unlawful termination after he complained that too much of the show was staged. Its sad that people cant see how unlikely it is that people will store something extremely valuable among a bunch of crap. Our storage locker has old books and a mattress...have fun with that. The good stuff is in our spare bedroom.

I want to rent out a storage unit, fill it to the ceiling with empty boxes with high priced electronics logos on the sides to make it look like there is a million dollars of inventory inside then stop making rent payments on the unit. I'd love to see the face of the rube who then paid top dollar for it at auction.
