Know what, Smoky? Discussion could be just as lively on this topic if you'd go ahead and say exactly what you mean. I think we do agree, at least you and I do, about overpopulation being a problem. It certainly is. The earth does not have an infinite supply of resources to sustain us all. The next step is always wars of aggression fighting over those resources.

Some kinds of people limit the size of their families to have a better quality of life for all. Some do not and don't seem to care if their children starve or die as long as they can prove their 'virility' by having them. (that's definitely the case in most of the third world as any Peace Corps or other health worker can tell you.) You cannot teach people out of environmental selfishness when they have less intelligence than a gorilla! They only respect or understand force. We can allow nature to be that force and they will eventually exterminate themselves.

I give no more above than the same excuse hunters have for killing deer. "If we don't hunt them, they'll overpopulate and die!" What's the difference? Where do we get the idea that a selfish human has any more natural right to the space he takes up on the earth than a deer does? Everything conscious has a soul.

Surely we don't need more than we have already or even as many as we have! It's the breeding adults I wish we could limit in number, every time I see a hungry child. And no matter how many civilized nations try to help the poor ones, the help doesn't get to where it's supposed to go because of their corrupt governments. We'd have to change whole cultures in order to make the least difference and unfortunately, the worst of those have proved to be far more resilient than the people they oppress.

People are ruining the earth but it's not just because of large numbers. One morally bankrupt corporation with just a few board members and the politicians they pay off is all it takes to ruin the environment of a large area. How many people did it take to ruin the Gulf of Mexico? Not nearly as many as those who are doomed to suffer the consequences.

Costs will only go down when you get rid of the middlemen keeping the price up in the first place.

Do you remember when there was a glut in the produce market in California, in the 90's? No gleaners allowed, no contributions to hungry elderly or children. The food was left to rot on the ground! When the horrible EU junta came to power, they were making farmers pour out milk onto the ground and wouldn't let them even give it away to the needy. Let's get rid of people like that first. On that, I think everybody at GLP would agree. Is there a greater sin than to let people starve and food go to waste just because of greed?

When it's put that way....maybe we think twice? We can't play God...we're not better than the people we think are idiots...we are one, and we are precious. Embrace your fellow man. Another wise man (the Buddha) once said: "If you're still breathing...you still have work to do." Nothing is on accident, everything is on purpose. Every second we're still here...we're working towards something.
