Quoting: Lygiea 1284748Does anyone know what they believe? I am not sure how his religious persuasion matters so much; I've learned loads of interesting things from people I wouldn't let into my house. I have pretty serious philosophical differences with the author but found the book to be fascinating; it was a great history lesson. Here's from the website: "One of the primary questions I get about the book is "Is this book just some religious treatise, or some tool to jam somebody's Bible philosophy down our throats"? Not all of the questions are framed like that, but many of them have the question as their root. So I wanted to frankly share some thoughts with you. I have been living Off Off-Grid for many years, and have lived and experienced the lifestyle about which I write. In learning how to live this way I have learned things (valuable things) from Buddhists, Pagans, Mormons, New-Agers, Atheists, and even Christians. I think it would be ridiculous and stupid of me not to listen to someone who can teach me something just because of some religious or philosophical biases I hold. In fact, I have listened to people attack and berate my religion (sometimes rightfully so) patiently in order to learn skills, tactics, and techniques that will be valuable (or even temporally salvific) for me and my family. There are humans out there with skills and wisdom and I am willing to learn things from them no matter what they believe about God and eternity. You should be too. As I explain in the book, I am a Christian and unapologetically so. My attacks and condemnations are directed as much at modern "christianity" as much as at any other failed worldview. In my book I plainly state that I believe that the largest transfer of wealth, land, know-how, and freedom in the history of the world has happened during the so-called "Christian" era. This book takes to task that failed and apostate worldview, trumpeted by modernist "christianity" that has gotten us where we are today. It also, interestingly, puts a stake in the heart of many modern "survivalist", "prepper", and "off-grid" philosophies that are just as dangerous and just as harmful to our independence. Most people that make their money by selling useless crap to people who will likely die trying to use it, are not going to like my book. But I find it interesting and distressing that supposedly intelligent and engaged people would consider depriving themselves of good and right thinking and information because of ignorant prejudices. I've tried not to do that, and so should you. I am absolutely certain that there is so much good and valuable information and wisdom in the book that it is impossible that you would not gain more than $19.95 by reading the book. At the very least you will have gained some valuable insight into a philosophy and worldview that I can assure you you probably have not studied before." |

I'm already well aware of the issues and I know what I believe and where I stand. It's the practicality of that kind of living, how to do it and where. Most of the 3rd world already lives 'off grid', but I don't see too many survivalists joining them in Ethopia. A good option is Willing Workers on Organic Farms. They have a web site, just google it. If you have the money, you start or buy a farm. I suppose there are these agrarian socities, as the author belongs to one, and that's something I'd like to learn more about. What it comes down to is MONEY. It's always money. You actually NEED MONEY just to make the transition to off-grid living. |

Solar is only good if you have sun. I get a bit sick of solar tards, imagine if texas suddenly had 23 hours of cloud lol. The sophisticated "wont" survive because they havent got the in built skills to adapt. Give me a few 3rd worlders....Thats why we can say goodbye to the majority of the USA. This guy advocates not prepping, but DOING< and how to get there. There is a lot of how to in the book, as he talks about the experiences the community has had starting with absolutely nothing and THRIVING. |

The author of the book has been DOING and brings the logic of surviving off grid to its logical conclusion, which is, eventually you will develop enough skill and preparedness to live like people lived before us. Hence, the title of the book Surviving OFF OFF-GRID. |

If you buy the book from Amazon.com on March 4th and you read at least half of it (the least anyone can ask from a supposedly thinking person) and you do not feel it will help you or benefit you in any way, Amazon will take it back. This is an easy promise because Amazon has a very good return policy. You can't lose." from the [link to offoffgrid.com] website |

SSW User ID: 1145300 United States 03/04/2011 09:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm groovin' on this part: Modern society has now, over the past 100 years, reinstituted the cult of carelessness by allowing men to “prosper” without thinking. Survival thinking is now to be done corporately, not individually. As new “wisdom” makes the old wisdom obsolete (they think), innovation is piled on innovation; all is automated and centralized until, eventually,“survival” is guaranteed and accomplished for the people (as a bulk called “consumers”)… so long as they promise not to ever stop consuming, never stop buying, and never question where it is all coming from or to what purpose. Hunting, gathering, sowing, reaping – all of these survival skills – are accomplished by proxy, because the people are far too dainty and sensitive to care for themselves. In effect, the cult of carelessness has reestablished the lie that you can live and thrive indefinitely without thinking about it. Provision, and all of the machinations of it, is a work of specialists and is none of your concern.Your job is to work at your assigned chore, like a cog or widget in a machine, earn “money”, and spend it on stuff you do not need and that can do you no eternal good. Heedless consumption is the guarantee of survival, in a Ponzi-scheme of epic proportions. |

SSW User ID: 1145300 United States 03/04/2011 09:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's a good review: Michael Bunker has an uncanny ability to make a compelling argument. He does not disappoint in his latest book "Surviving Off Off-Grid: Decolonizing the Industrial Mind." This is his best work yet. What I found most refreshing about this book is that he works from the "why" point of view and not so much the "how." There are plenty of how-to guides when it comes to agrarianism, off-grid living, sustainability, or survival preparedness. In fact, many books from our past describing the "old ways" are available online. But Bunker takes us further on the journey and explores how we got here, what is unsustainable about the industrialized system, and how you can and should alter your mindset. Clue: stockpiling food, goods, and equipment from the industrial world will not cut it in a societal collapse. I read the Kindle edition. I will be buying a paperback copy for myself and additional copies to share with some friends who need to "decolonize their industrial mind." |

SSW User ID: 1145300 United States 03/04/2011 09:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Another book excerpt: In Europe, if you were not of the rich, landed, and titled class, you were expected to live your life in the service and fear of rich men with power. It is said that when poor men would see a man on the road wearing a wig, they would flee as if for their lives, because they knew that a wig was a representation of arbitrary political and economic power. In the colonies, very few people (except slaves) knew anything of such fear. In South Carolina, it was virtually impossible to find anyone who was willing to serve in the government, even with the promise of political power, because most men had land and comfort and were responsible to their God and to themselves. They had no desire to exercise power over other men’s consciences or lives. In Europe, joining the military was not always voluntary, but it was considered a way to escape the desperation and squalor of abject poverty. In Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia, it became difficult to get men to commit to the military defense of the colonies at the behest of the distant King, because even the lower classes considered themselves free gentlemen and they lived good and comfortable lives. Landed freemen had no desire to get mixed up in the King’s intrigues when there were negligible benefits and everything to lose. In the northern colonies employers complained that they were forced to pay extraordinary high wages, even to lowskilled workers, to keep them at their work, even going so far as bringing employees to their homes to eat at their own tables, because any good man who was a hard worker could easily and inexpensively purchase his own land and begin his own estate as a gentleman farmer (this was before the advent of ad valorem taxes). While there were some spectacularly rich and powerful estate and plantation owners who owned thousands, or tens of thousands of acres, 90% of male citizen farmers owned estates of less than 200 acres; in fact, most colonial farms were around 40-50 acres, which was considered the maximum amount of land that a family could work without servants or slaves. In 1752 in Virginia, virtually every farmer grew at least some tobacco for sale, usually just enough to provide for the next year’s cash needs, and almost every farmer had milk and beef cows, pigs, corn, vegetables, and a comfortable house. Yet, we are told by modern educators in public schools and by many historians today that electricity was the great “equalizer” of men, and that all men, except the very rich, were poor, miserable, and downtrodden prior to the electrification of the country. This lie is the product of government paid educators, history revisionists, and henchmen of the industrial elite. GO DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH! |
