I've visited Russia on numerous occasion in the 90's as well as recently and it is my, as well as my friends and coworkers objective opinion that things are simply incomparable then and now. it is like night and day. I have seen Moscow's bread and meat lines in the early 90's, that was not pretty.
you may not like Putin but he has done wonders for Russia, both economically and image-wise.
