HOW LONG CAN YOUR GARDEN SEEDS KEEP FRESH IF PLACE IN FREEZER?
I have read on this blog a number of times that one should buy garden seeds, however my question is:- HOW LONG CAN YOUR HEIRLOOM GARDEN SEEDS KEEP IN YOUR FREEZER AND STILL ENABLE YOU TO HAVE AT LEAST A 90% GERMINATION WHEN YOU DECIDE TO USE THEM?

We know that Brassica such as Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, and other vegetables like lettuce, carrot don't carry seeds therefore one would prefer to store the seeds of these more than for example a tomato, cucumber, sweet pepper as these would carry seeds in which you can save and reuse each time.

I await your humble responses.

I have used 5 year old seeds, not kept in freezer just stored in the closet.

Save any seeds you have now. you never know when or what you need.

Not sure who told you to put the seeds in the freezer but not a good idea....

Although some seeds do need a freezing period to stratify before germination (i.e) Tree seeds etc, I always keep my vegie seeds in a cool dark place.

They say 3 years max but I used seeds last year that were 6 years old with great success.

Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuces, carrots DEFINITELY produce seeds.

Either you're an idiot, or you shouldn't be gardening, or both.

Good grief, learn something!

ALL of them produce seeds, look them up! I can even get seeds from them all here in ALASKA if I start early enough, and put them in sand in a cool place to over winter. Pffft!

Lettuce and carrots bolt easily too, even here. Where do you think the SEEDS COME FROM in the first place?
wtf

If kept at around 40deg they can last up to 20 years. Don’t freeze them though cause ice crystals can form inside and kill them.
Typically just a cool dry dark place is best and they can last several years.
Also if you go to plant them you should soak them in water first cause old seeds have a tendency to have a hard time getting out of there shell even if there still alive.

Listen my dear I am not looking a fighting match, I am simple asking a question yes I Know they all produce seeds, when you have to wait 2 years for something to go seeds it is quite a long time. The questions was thrown out for positive answers not for a confrontation.

Check out Geri Guidetti's Q&A button at arkinstitute.com for complete directions on storing seed. FYI, they will keep for decades if done right!

The book Seed to Seed by Suzanne Ashworth is excellent on seed saving.

I have a copy on the bookcase four feet from me - so in true GLP fashion -

Two years for seeds in my location, not most. I was being accurate.

There are much better places than glp to ask about seeds and gardening in general. Try looking up Dave's Garden Web, for one. There are literally tens of thousands of websites, blogs and so forth available at your fingertips. The USDA has a huge amount of information online, and so do most universities and colleges, research institutes, etc.

If you are overwhelmed by Google, try Bing.

Re: HOW LONG CAN YOUR GARDEN SEEDS KEEP FRESH IF PLACE IN FREEZER?
PS.

First rule: Know your hardiness zone. Buy only what is typically successful in your growing zone. Most seed companies have the information in the seed description. The "days to maturity" generally means from the date the start or seed goes into the ground under optimum conditions.

Second rule: Know the differences between heirloom, nonGmo, organic and hybrid seeds. Chose according to your preference, there are organic hybrids, for example. In some areas, hybrids may be the only realistic choice. They will not "breed true" from season to season, however. Heirloom is best if you can manage it.

Third rule: Don't attempt to grow what you don't eat. They take more space than you think, too-and usually much more time and water than expected.

Fourth rule: Ask local gardeners, at greenhouses, and your local Agricultural offices-in the US, that is the Co-operative Extension Service-in the white pages. They are all willing to help.

Fifth rule: Learn soil composition, and invest in some reference books to help you get started.

Sixth rule: It takes a LOT of distance to truly manage different varieties of the same vegetable. Usually, 300 feet or better-bees, your best garden helper, can carry pollen quite a long ways.

Re: HOW LONG CAN YOUR GARDEN SEEDS KEEP FRESH IF PLACE IN FREEZER?
Many people I know personally garden, just like I do. And each and every one has ambitious plans to increase garden capacity this year. Most have stocked up on seeds. For myself, I grow vegetable starts wholesale, so am fortunate there. But it was a steep learning curve until I invested a lot of time in learning a little something about doing it properly.

Times are tough, and I will no doubt end up giving away quite a number of flats to those that need to grow as much extra food as possible.

OH and another note...once you have your garden planted, get busy learning about how to properly harvest and store it.

Freezing, pickling/fermenting, salting, smoking, drying, canning.....it all takes some skill and knowledge.

All my seed companies say not to freeze, so I don't. I have some bean seeds that came from 7 seeds found in a cave that were about 2000 years old. Of the 7, 5 were viable. They were stored in a clay pot, sealed with pitch and in the cave, in the desert regions. So cool, dry and air tight.

I know people do freeze them, so it must be ok too.

How many SHTFs have you or they gone through? How can anyone know what or or if it will come? Myself I will be prepared.

I just learned "everything you ever wanted to know about food dehydration" from the Excaliber Dehydrator site...there's a customer who put together a bunch of awesome videos that they've featured.

Stored properly, dehydrated foods can last up to 30 years according to her. They take up less space and don't require electricity as freezing does.

Re: HOW LONG CAN YOUR GARDEN SEEDS KEEP FRESH IF PLACE IN FREEZER?
my grandfather would keep his seed in a silo over winter. And we always froze seeds if we could. Container has to be airtight. If you leave the seeds where its warm and dark they will "burn". They wont be very good plants if they grow at all.

freezing
1. airtight jars.
2. between 32-40 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. dark

Cooled
1. paper envelopes/jars/coffee cans/ etc..
2. 35-55 degrees Fahrenheit
3. dark
4. Shake the seeds once a month. (keeps them from baking themselves)

i planted corn from my grandpas old seeds and they were from 1975. Good seed right there(they were froze in old canning jars.)
