Ok, so the previously unknown comet fits with Comet Elenin, discovered December 2010.

Earthquakes and volcanoes erupting and disrupting weather systems - we only have to look at the extreme weather in the USA/UK over the last 2 months, and the earthquakes in New Zealand. Let's not forget the flooding in Australia, and the massive cyclone that hit there too.

Social upheaval and political strife - Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Libya etc.

The great and rich power subject to serious natural disasters seems to be Australia - floods, cyclone, earthquakes (New Zealand, but still the same part of the world) as I mentioned, and the recent fires.

Any thoughts?
