Has anyone here succesfully stopped drinking???

How did you do? How old were you when you stopped?

5 years for me.

Here's the deal... If you can stay sober for a while, the "urge" to drink goes away and things get much easier.

For me, the "urge" went away after about three weeks or so.

You should realize that drinking is a very selfish act. It hurts those around you, big time. Have you considered AA?

Yes but everyone in AA is old... How old were you when you stopped????

6+ years not a drop. No therapy, no other drugs, no intervention, no significant emotional event. Just stopped and the parasite withered and died. But the empty shell is always there as a grave and scar tissue to remind me.

We just celebrated my hubby's 10 year sobriety anniversary! When you reach your absolute bottom, you can only go up! No one ever likes hear how he got sober and stays that way...by the Grace of God. Plain and Simple!

Quit back in 1995 and never looked back, and yes, I was a true drunken slob in those days...
How did I do it? I woke up! Spiritual awakening is the key. I cannot tell you exactly how to have a life-changing mystical experience of your own...each person must find his own way. But it IS possible!

What age for you?

just stopped drinking too exy, would have to live on street or do crime, used to spend a fortune to make myself sick. grew pot and smoked for while but got busted, so that got expensive too. cigarettes will have to go one day also...not just yet

ONE DAY AT A TIME, PICK UP THE BIG BOOK, TREAT IT AS YOUR BIBLE, FIND A SPONSER, GET OUT WITH HIM PLAY GOLF GO SEE A MOVIE, EAT DINNER, GET COFFEE, YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR SELF AS BUSY AS POSSIBLE WITH ALL POSITIVE THINGS... WHAT I DID IS I RELEASED STRESS AT THE GYM, DEPENDING ON HOW MUCH YOU DRINK 3 WEEKS TO 3 MONTHS YOU SHOULD BE FEELING BETTER...REMEMBER ALCHOLISM IS A DISEASE AND IS 100% CURABLE...CHECK YOURE LOCAL CITY HALL AA OR NA MEETINGS....EVERY CITY, EVERY TOWN, EVERY STATE HAS A MEETING GOING ON...WORK THE 12 STEPS AND LOVE LIFE..YOU CAN DO IT MAN.

58 coming this year. Stopped somewhere around 51, 52. I don't look into the past. That is a key component. No oldies music. No old photos. No old videos. EVERYTHING is for today and revel in the energy of the incoming future.

Check out different meetings if you live in a city, there are many different groups, where some may be much younger than the other.

Also, those old people, know a lot of shit, some may be 20 yrs sober, others may be 2 days sober, but you can find people who have been there, done that, and can really help you.

But you really need to find a meeting group that "clicks" for you.

no hangovers are a good reward. got pet dogs and they like to get up for early run
once, a few nyes ago, i had 1 shot of benedictine with milk. was sick for three days.

The handfull of meetings I have been to they have all had an underlying tone of you NEED to bring Positive things into your life in order to recover... All negative things (including fear) need to be removed...

Support from people other than family and friends. Avoid situations that supported drinking in the past. There will be a time when attending AA or other support groups that you'll find yourself developing relationships the same way you did when drinking. This is key to recognizing how you operate. Identify internal mechanisms (thoughts, feelings) that occur when you feel you are getting reliant or close to those in support situations. If you can afford it, chose a therapist that guides wisely; you'll know it when you see it. Speak your heart and mind in support groups. Understand the concepts behind shame and guilt. Find out what co-dependency is. Keep a sense of humor about things. Never give up. If you slip, try to learn why and move on. Don't listen to your parents or siblings from hear on out but respect them. Eat when you're hungry and sleep when you're tired. Pray/meditate often. Thank God for everything.

I went one time to AA and after I saw how a lot of people were replacing one addiction for another (smoking coffee and sweets) I never went back.
I eventually quit around age 35 and didn't start drinking till age 42. What the doctors don't like to tell you is that about a third of the alcoholics can go back to drinking and control themselves but they don't have a way of figuring out who that will be. Thus they tell everyone to stop drinking.
I will have 1-2 drinks for a few days then not drink fro 6 months. Eating a high protein diet and staying away from refined sugar helps to keep the desire down in my case.

IM 22 YEARS OLD AND QUIT WHEN I WAS 20, NOT EVEN OF LEGAL DRINKING AGE..GO TO A MEETING AND LISTEN TO THE OLDER FOLK...I GO TO A MEETING TWICE A WEEK NOW...."TO YOUNG TO BE GLUM" (WHICH IS ALL 18-26 YEAR OLDS AND THEN AN ALL MENS GROUP ON SUNDAY MORNING YOU NEED THAT SPIRITUAL AWAKINING AND MUST HAVE A HIGHER POWER!! HELL..MY HIGHER POWER FOR THE FIRST YEAR AND A HALF WAS THE DOOR HANDLE TO MY VEHICLE.... SILLY BUT U NEED ONE..GOOD LUCK BRO...IT WILL AL WOORK OUT FOR YOU I PROMISE IT GETS EASIER..

I had been consuming a steady increase of beer over a 6 year period. It started with 20 oz on Friday nights, and ended up at 20-40 every night. A friend at work told me about a dream he had, where he was in a warehouse, running, trying to get out. He saw a tall pile of junk and dirt in one corner of the building, and up at the top of the pile was a hole that the sun was shining through. He climbed frantically up and up and was about to go through to freedom, but he felt something around his leg holding him back, he turned and saw that there was a shackle around his ankle, with a chain attached. He despaired! BUT, Jesus was standing next to him with bolt cutters and He cut him free.

I asked Jesus to use His "bolt cutters" and set me free. He did. It's been 4 years now. Praise Jesus!

i use to drink everyday!! for years...i think it was easy for me because i moved and i was no longer around the people and enviroment....drinking by urself is boring, i don't want to do it anymore.
