Montana: I90 fires could shutdown power to Western areas - Heads up Portland and Seattle
Sorry if already posted, but here is the latest on the wildfires in Montana, some of which are threatening to shutdown the BPA transmission lines near Alberton. These many human-caused fires along the I90 corridor are blazing away, along with others all over Montana and other western states.

I weep for the West.

Tarkio Wildfire Kicking Up
August 10, 2005

The Tarkio wildfire burning west of Missoula along the Interstate 90 corridor is kicking up
and firefighters may not be able to keep up with it.
Fire boss Bob Sandman told Alberton area residents last night that an active firefight is
going on and he won´t even guess how large the fire might become.
The incident commander on the I-90 fires says the latest breakout by the Tarkio fire was
caused by wind yesterday afternoon and the fire could outrun efforts to stop it.
The Tarkio fire and the West Mountain fire northwest of Alberton both potentially threaten a
major Bonneville Power Administration transmission line that supplies electricity to the
Pacific Northwest. Combined, the fires total about 4300 acres and are considered the nation´s
Number two priority, behind a wildfire burning in Washington state.
Officials said about 850 people are on the lines. Sandman says the Tarkio fire jumped fire
lines dozed in front of it yesterday as if they weren´t even there.

That´s awful! We were burning up with wildfires in Arizona not too long ago... now the monsoon rains are drowning us. Amazing weather this year. Praying it rains up your way soon.

Seattle City Light supplies the elctricity to Seattle and most of that power in from the North Cascades Hydro-electric complex at Newhalem/Diablo.

Thanks 42, I´m glad you are getting the rains, hopefully not TOO much at once! We are expecting a change soon, from the mid-high 90´s all through July and just last weekend, to mid 70´s this weekend, hopefully with some actual rain not just dry-lightning storms (20 lightning strike fires started in the Bitterroot a couple days ago, most in wilderness areas and are being allowed to burn.) Insanely extreme weather this year, even for Montana! Good luck to you and yours ;)

Indred - the summer of 2000 we spent on 10 minute evacuation status (only one road in and out of our neighborhood). That was enough for me, I now live further east on the Clark Fork River area in the foothills. Hi to your Mom-in-law!

;)

AC 70 - could be. Major investigations ongoing into whodunit. At least a dozen fires in a 3-4 hour period last Thursday, all along a short stretch of I90 on both sides of the interstate. All they´re saying for sure is ´human caused´ right now, could be accidental (a truck dragging a chain, causing sparks, but seems unlikely on BOTH sides of the Interstate)

RBH - the report on the news said these BPA lines supply power to Portland and Seattle, specifically mentioned. My guess is the power to these large cities probably comes from many places based upon needs and availability. Columbia River dams surely provide much of Portland´s power also. Hopefully, other sources will come online if this major line is interrupted, but there is much demand for power everywhere this summer due to the extreme heat.

Montanan 912 - nope, lived in the Bitterroot for a number of years, moved to the Rolling Thunder Ranch (YES!) in 2003. We did look at property up by Superior, but didn´t like the BPA lines around there, also not enough flattish land for us. Also a pretty major fault line up the Nine Mile, trying to avoid living atop those!! LOL

Do you mind saying whereabouts you are located? Do I know you by another name>avatar?
