Well, they translated words according to what it would be more understandable by the people. Tartarus was not a known mythical place in the non-greek educated world. They also translated words that were meaning "food" as "meat" probably because most germanic people had the meat as the main food while this would be a very rare occasion in the East Mediterranean.
