A Weird Feeling You'll Get Seeing THIS! 105 yr old Film Market St. San Francisco 4 Days before 1906 Earthquake!
A friend got this in an e-mail and sent to me and I am still completely amazed! I'd never have believed there were that many automobiles on the road then, and what drivers! Good thing they couldn't go very fast.

More details, which I'll source for you as soon as I can:
"This film, originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn with the
Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum figured out exactly when it was shot. From
New York trade papers announcing the film showing to the wet streets from
recent heavy rainfall & shadows indicating time of year & actual weather
and conditions on historical record, even when the cars were registered (he
even knows who owned them and when the plates were issued!).. It was filmed
only four days before the Great California Earthquake of April 18th 1906
and shipped by train to NY for processing. Amazing, but true!"

I see dead people.

Not one person in that film is still alive today... NOT ONE.

Give that some thought, won't you?

If there were so little traffic directing today, it would take people an hour to get to work every day, and people would be leaning out their windows, yelling and shooting pistols.

For some reason Market looks much wider than it is today. However, the drivers haven't improved and the traffic is worse now than it was then.

Wow, 4 days before an earthquake would change their way of life forever. Made me think of the following Scripture:

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. ~~Luke 13: 3-5

It does take an hour to get to work every day, plus time to find parking. rant I hate driving in San Francisco. It makes driving in LA appear to be a country drive through a Nebraska farm town by comparison.

I got the strangest sense of déjà vu watching this thing, can't even describe it. Maybe really old films are better at conveying the 'frozen in a time warp' experience, because the window into this world looks not only completely real but still open, as if we could climb over the sill into it.

Did you?? What did you call it? I ran a search here for it and couldn't find it. I was almost certain someone here would have done so if it had been up any time at all. As it was, my friend just got it today, from his friend and on and on.

OP,

I posted this film a few months ago, it had a modern song
to go with...

My little brother sent it to me. And all I could think about
watching those people crossing the trolley tracks, going about
their day was history is going to repeat itself! The prophesied San Francisco quake coming soon, it's going to take a lot of souls. It will actually be an act of God's mercy for some.

As u watch it the same cars are in over & over - I saw a couple of historians review the film when it cam out - they claimed they used the same cars so it would look like there were more.

I understand the weird feeling. Could be cause we know what happens to these people, certainly some died.

What a neat film. It is so cool to be able to look back like this. Everybody always looks so dressed up back then.
