Truck Carrying Explosives Blows Up in Utah
Thursday August 11, 2005 4:16 AM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A tractor-trailer carrying 35,500 pounds of explosives overturned and exploded Wednesday, injuring four people and leaving a huge crater in a Utah highway.
The truck driver, a passenger in the cab, a motorist and a man on a motorcycle were hospitalized after the truck ``pretty much vaporized,´´ Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said.
The explosion left a crater in two-lane U.S. 6 estimated to be between 20 feet and 35 feet deep, Utah Department of Transportation spokesman Tom Hudachko said.
``The entire road is gone, shoulder to shoulder, there´s no asphalt left,´´ he said.
Witnesses said the truck´s driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle after taking a curve at high speed, Highway Patrol Lt. Doug McCleve said.
It was believed the accident started a fire, which triggered the explosion, Hudachko said.
The driver, a 30-year-old man who was not identified, was transported by helicopter to University of Utah Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.
Witnesses rushed to help the driver and his passenger, freeing the pair from their safety belts, McCleve said.
The dazed driver was just coherent enough to say the word ``explosive,´´ giving rescuers a sense of the danger, he said.
Two people in critical condition were taken by medical helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. The motorcycle driver, J.D. Herbert, was taken by ambulance and was in satisfactory condition.
Herbert, of Denver and nephew of Utah Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert, said he was trying to warn motorists about the truck accident when the explosion blew him off his motorcycle.
``It´s truly just a powerful force that kicks you right in the butt,´´ he told Salt Lake City television station KUTV. ``The shrapnel is hitting the forest, and crackling like bacon.´´
The rig, from R&R Trucking of Duenweg, Mo., had just left commercial explosives maker Ensign-Bickford Co. at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon when the accident happened. The truck was headed to Oklahoma, company officials said. They wouldn´t say what type of explosives the truck was carrying.

Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company
Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company (EBA&D) designs and manufactures energetic solutions to meet the unique needs of the Army and the defense community. The company traces it’s roots to 1836, when William Bickford’s invention of Safety Fuse lead to the formation of The Ensign-Bickford Company. Safety fuse, originally developed for the mining industry, later found it’s first military application during the Civil War.
Throughout the years, the company and the corporation have demonstrated a history of innovation in the field of energetic components and systems. Building upon the safety fuse heritage, The Ensign-Bickford Company introduced Primacord detonating cord in 1936. Today, EBA&D continues to supply safety fuse and detonating cord for military demolition operations performed by Army Combat Engineers.
Responding to the need for safe and reliable energetic products to support the development of strategic missiles during the 1950’s, Ensign-Bickford introduced a line of metal-sheathed linear ordnance products, including Mild Detonating Fuse and Linear Shaped Charge. EBA&D’s linear ordnance assemblies are used today in critical aerospace systems such as stage separation, flight termination and skin severance on tactical missiles, strategic missiles, and launch vehicles.
In the 1970’s, The Ensign-Bickford Company introduced shock tube-based non-electric detonators to the U.S. market. Non-electric detonators are used today in military demolition, explosive ordnance disposal, minefield clearing, explosives testing, and other special applications and have largely replaced electric blasting caps due to their reduced susceptibility to radio frequency and other stray electrical energy sources. In 1995, EBA&D converted many of the U.S. Army’s electric detonators to non-electric detonators under a program called the Modernized Demolition Initiative.
MDI-Modernized Demolition Initiators - The Soldiers’ family of non-electric initiation system.
EBA&D Today
Today, EBA&D is part of a diverse corporation (Ensign-Bickford Industries, Inc.) with core holdings in the field of explosives, biotechnology and commercial real estate.
EBA&D remains a leader in aerospace and defense ordnance through our core competencies of system engineering, operational excellence, and energetics technology. EBA&D products provide advanced capability to both the battlefield Soldier, and supporting weapon system platforms:
· Military Demolition: Electric and non-electric initiation systems, tailored breaching systems, detonating cords, safety fuse and special application products
· Breaching Systems: Minefield breaching, wall and obstacle breaching, and customized application systems
· Tactical Weapons: Warhead loading (cast cure and pressed), fuzing, intelligent initiation systems and munition dispensing systems
· Energetics and Specialty Chemicals: Plastic bonded explosives, enhanced and isostatically pressed explosives, formulation, characterization and testing capabilities
· Space, Strategic and Aircraft: Launch vehicle ordnance systems including motor initiation, stage separation, fairing separation, spacecraft release and flight termination as well as aircraft egress components
Within the United States, EBA&D operates manufacturing facilities in Simsbury, Connecticut and Graham, Kentucky. Both facilities include engineering, manufacturing and test capabilities and meet the highest levels of environmental, quality and safety standards.
EBA&D Tomorrow
EBA&D’s products allow the Soldier to rapidly deliver specialized energetics on target. Our products succeed in applications where high reliability is critical. Countless missions have relied on our expertise in peacetime, as well as times of war. As we look ahead, we intend to continue to support the Army with the most advanced capabilities, knowledge and resources in the field of energetic systems. Some examples of these capabilities and products are:
· MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) requires tools that give soldiers flexibility and ease of operation. EBA&D is addressing the need to rapidly breach structural walls with our Rapid Wall Breaching Kit (RWBK). Other products like Integral Firing Devices (IFD) and Breacher Strips will give soldiers a much-improved capability for light breaching.
· Clearing a safe footpath through a minefield can be performed quickly with the Anti-Personnel Obstacle Breaching System (APOBS) manufactured by EBA&D. APOBS is a two man portable obstacle breaching system used to protect the Soldier from anti-personnel mines, and various wire and other obstacles.
· Overpowering the enemy with our Enhanced Blast Explosives and customized delivery systems. With the ever changing threats against out troops, EBA&D has stayed one step ahead by developing new explosive formulations to defeat current and future threats.
· Protecting our armored vehicles with LF-2 explosive is a key component of explosive reactive armor systems. EBA&D explosive compositions for reactive armor systems are key components of both the Army Bradley Fighting Vehicle and Stryker Programs.
RWBK- Rapid Wall Breaching Kit - The Army´s new solution to breaching brick and concrete walls.
Our products succeed in applications where high reliability and Soldier safety are critical. The advantage we offer is unified knowledge of energetic systems. Relentless testing, real-world applications, and cross-disciplined development are the reasons why no other company can match the breadth of energetics innovation that EBA&D can offer. Going forward, EBA&D will continue to add new capabilities and provide novel energetic solutions to the U.S. Army. EBA&D looks forward to continuing our support of the Army, because we understand that when it´s your mission, there is no second chance!

Breaking: Explosion closes Spanish Fork Canyon, injures at least six
A 6-foot R&R Co. trailer truck hauling 35,000 pounds of caste booster explosives rolled and exploded between the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon and the intersection of Highway 89, pealing off railroad tracks, triggering a massive dirt slide and creating a large crater in the ground.
Six people were injured in the accident, one critically, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. The driver of the truck and the passenger were flown to an area hospital.
Janet Frank, spokeswoman for Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, told Channel 2 news three people had been admitted. Two suffered critical injuries and a third person was in satisfactory condition.
LDS Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said three Life Flight helicopters were dispatched to Spanish Fork Canyon and a fourth remained on standby.
The R&R Co. truck left the Ensign-Bickford Company chemical plant at 1:10 p.m. and was headed to Oklahoma. The explosion occurred about 45 minutes later.
The crater left by the explosion is 70 feet wide and 30 feet deep.

The FMSCA (Federal Motor Safety & Carrier Assoc.) looks into every hazmat accident there is & also looks into every explosion that involves a commerical vehicle.
Guaranteed, this will be looked into thoroughly. There will be a public record somewhere. |

Was the crash scene vacated and detonated from a distance because it was too unstable to salvage?
A blast leaving a 70 foot wide crater would kill anyone standing nearby. |

Think about it. The truck crashes, driver knows what he is hauling and exactly how much, gets out of the wreckage and begins screaming bloody muder for everyone to get as far away from the truck as possible. Everyone runs for cover and the truck explodes. |

Unless the truck caught fire, there´s really no reason for the explosives not to detonate on impact. |
