anyone else hearing a low rumbling sound in Los Angeles at night?

Research into mysterious humming in Groningen
GRONINGEN - The National Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM) investigates the origin of a mysterious and annoying hum which inhabitants of Grijpskerk are complaining about for years. Reported on Wednesday by the province of Groningen.

The complaints about a low hum have been there since November 2009. Initially it was thought that it came from plants of Gasunie Grijpskerk, but research showed that where not in effect at the time of the first symptoms.

im in south bay,ca near where all the fish died, and i hear
loud booms over my place at night too. just like someone
pounding on the walls incredibly hard. always around 9 or 10 at night. just started hearing these noises this year.
scares the crap out of me when im alone! no planes, trucks,
eqs, have no idea what it could be.

Not a plane, or a subway, lol, its more grindy and electronic sounding...

It will be like a hit and a low hum for about 20-30 seconds, then it hits again and rings-out for a low hum of about the same time, each time, over and over...

I assumed in a half-sleep state that it was something boring out large sections of underground spaces...

Also thought, it was like the Earth is ringing like a bell, and the hums make their way up to certain places...

Also considered that it may be an echo the earth is reverberating from the sun which is being influenced by, who knows what...

So cool you hear it too! Me and my buddy one day were like: "Yeah! WTF is that shit? Keeping me up at night, it's as annoying as it is mysterious!"

Maybe it's like that supposed giant creature from the Gulf, except ours is coming from the middle of the Pacific...

I live in mid-city LA. I'm up late a lot since I have a sleep disorder and I've been hearing this for longer than a few weeks, probably up to a year. My perception is that it sounds like it's coming from the air (the rumbling), but I sense a kind of 'hum' that comes from the ground also.

I also hear a ringing at times which sounds like my ears ringing (I've tested that it wasn't coming from my ears).

There was an unmarked black helicopter circling low over my neighborhood a couple days ago for about 1/2hr. I was observing it through my binoculars and it was not an LAPD bird either - those are black and white and media choppers have their station ID's and logos on them. The engine on this chopper was louder and stronger than police or media choppers and when it was moving away from my building, it sounded like the air rumbling I've been hearing.

Since this thread was started by LA, I'm going to post something else that you may have some info or insight. It's a freaky story one of my neighbors told me and no one believes her (even me, though I'm open to it possible truth).

One of my neighbors told me the following story:

About 10 years ago she and her cousins were trying to find the Los Angeles Children's Museum downtown (daylight). She said that because of how the streets alternate one-ways, they ended up lost. They turned down a street that was near the old Los Angeles Times building and just decided to walk since they thought they were close to the museum.

This street, from what she described, was full of trash, vacant empty buildings and no cars anywhere parked or using it in their transit. She said her cousin parked on the right side of the street - she remembers this because she said as the passenger, her car door opened to the sidewalk.

Ok, this is when the story becomes unbelievable. She said that when she was getting ready to get out the car, she noticed all these humanlike creatures approaching the car. She said they either had no arms, no legs, were blind and were wearing rags and dirty head bandages. She said they seemed to either have disfigured human faces or no face at all!

They were coming out of some abandoned building parallel to the car. They weren't talking, but she thought they were begging because the ones who had hands stuck them out. The ones who had one or no legs were scooting toward them and were grunting. She said she thought they were kids by their sizes but couldn't really tell b/c of facial disfigurement.

Well, my neighbor looked to her cousin, the driver, and asked him if he was seeing what she was. She said he confirmed that she wasn't hallucinating & they got the hell out of there.

She told her grandmother who didn't believe her and she said she had nightmares about this incident for weeks. She did admit to crying in fear when she saw these pathetic 'people'.

Now, I'm not from LA and had been here approx. 6-7 yrs when I met her and she told me the story when we went downtown to a function. My 1st. reaction was to laugh, but I stopped when I realized she was dead serious, was starting to cry and said that now that she's thinking about them she'll have nightmares again. Every person I told this story to who were native to LA did not believe any of this and just wrote her off as crazy (she's not the most realistic person I know, but I don't think she's crazy). I haven't had a chance to talk to her cousin - he lives in Vegas now & they had a falling out.

I saw her a couple months ago and asked her about it again because I had recently been downtown in the area I thought she described, though I didn't see anything. Her story was the same as her original version.

The only thing I've found remotely similar to her story was a legend of the Lizard People (Google search results:)

This was back in the 1930's and I haven't come across anything more recent. If anyone has any insights or additional information, please post!

Central Kentucky @ 2:30pm. I heard a rumbling that
I thought at first was a tornado. There was also
a crackling noise similar to logs burning in a
fire place.

When I got to the front porch I noticed there
was very little wind and there were no alarms
audible. It lasted about 30 seconds.

If it did happen, glitch in the system, blending of realities/times, something just went unexpectedly wrong...

It makes me wonder, if you go far enough off your projected path of what you're going to do next, if you're more likely to glitch the system?

You're welcome. I wasn't as awake and aware when she told me the initial story, but since then I've thought of the same possibilities. Interesting your statement about going far off your projected path may contribute to system glitches.

Its the red eye from LAX to NYC.

I've heard it on and off for months now.... Always late night, after midnight, I'm in the Hollywood Hills, just above Sunset Blvd at Doheny. Sometimes it goes on for hours, sometimes its not very loud, its a combo of thunder and fighter jets on their afterburners. Been trying to figure out what it is for quite a while, can't find info on any website, considering asking the few friends I have at Vandenberg AFB. It has to be military!

I live in Santa Clarita. I often have trouble sleeping and frequently hear muffled air traffic only in the wee hours of the morning, like 1:00 to 3:00 am. It's weird, why not during the day? I think some new stealth aircraft is being tested.

Been hearing it for several months. Especially at night when it is less noisy you can really notice it. Mayby it is coming from the sky or the ocean. I don't live near the ocean though but I definitely hear it.

Im from san jose and i hear those noise too but i think its an air plane

been hearing it In Alberta I think its more then just an incoming earthquake

I'm in Illinois and my room is in a basement. I have been hearing low rumblings for months now. It is on and off but mostly on. The sound is so very peculiar!

I'm in laguna Niguel and I kept on hearing booming sounds outside, probably coming from my neighbors backyard or further. My mom thought it was an earthquake and this is the second time that I have NOTICED (I might have missed a bunch). This is really freaking me out. Pls respond soon!

I'm also in South OC and just started a thread about the Camp Pendelton website being down. I went there to check on their artillery training schedule because there are very loud booms outside. Usually it coincides with Pendelton's artillery training, but I haven't been able to get any information as of yet. These sounds and vibrations are much stronger than usual.

Well your friend is right.
Your are going to transit between your third and fourth and fifth story building when the earthquake hit your dimension.

i heard this exact same thing just a week or so ago here in ft laud and being here 36 years i had never heard anything like it before it sounded like low thunder and it lasted for several minutes.

Just read the thread title and OP post and thought I should state that my husband and I have heard the same thing, off and on for several weeks now.

Always around 8 pm to 11 pm when we notice it. We have heard it several times (4 or 5 times in one evening. Sometimes only a couple of times and other evenings, not at all.

It is a low rumble/vibration, audible.

We live in the high mountain desert about 45 or 50 min. NE of Los Angeles.

When we hear it, it only lasts a second or two.

I do not think it is from Camp pendleton. That is over 2 hours away from us.

When we hear it it sounds like it is from the ground, but not sure. Usually we hear it in the evening while in the house and with a movie on. That's why I mentioned vibration/sound. We have mentioned to each other what a low audible sound. Strange we hear it with the DVD going.

I was laying in my bed one night a couple of weeks ago reading a book, (Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson), between 2AM and 3AM in the morning, when I heard the house crack and shake a little bit, then I felt my bed shake a little bit. I heard a low rumbling sound when this was happening. I said to myself that is odd I have never heard a rumbling sound to an earthquake in my life; I am sixty and have lived in California since I was a year old. So later on that morning I decided to look at USGS on the net to see what size the earthquake was. It said there was a 2.0 earthquake in the La Vern, Claremont, Upland area around 2:30 in the morning. So I said there was an earthquake but why did I feel such a small one, and why did I hear a rumbling sound coming from deep in the earth? I usually only feel earthquakes that are 4.0 or bigger, since I am so used to them. I figured that anything this small was not going to relieve any of the stress on our local faults. You usually have to have a 5.0 to provide any relief. Since it has been about 2 years since our last good shaker, (The Palm Springs earthquake), I figure a big one is coming for Southern California. The earthquake in Japan moved the Pacific Plate 8 feet closer to the North American Continent, so I figure with all that increased stress pushing against us we are due for a large quake somewhere on the west coast of the North American Continent. Since people back east are hearing these deep rumbling sounds I wonder if the hole North American continent is shuddering from this increased stress pushing against it

On a side note my mother a few weeks ago said she and my nephew heard a loud bang that sounded like a large rock had been thrown against the side of the house or fell on the roof. She sent my nephew out to investigate and he found nothing that could have made that large banging noise. She asked me if I had heard it, and I said no I was sound asleep with earplugs in my ears. This must have been a very large bang, since my mother is quite deaf, I have to yell at her so she can hear me talk to her only a few feet away. She also plays her TV up full blast so she can hear it, (That's why I wear earplugs). So this bang must have been awful loud for her to hear it, and be afraid. She said it was not a sonic boom.

Sorry, I meant the whole North American Continent. Also my mom was in her room when when she and my nephew heard the huge bang.
