The question of how far will it be from Earth at its closest approach is not set in concrete. Assuming in the first place they are giving us the REAL data!

It still has to go through the asteroid belt and there it MAY be thrown off course by collisions with objects within the belt! This may either take it further away, not affect it at all - (probably because it's so huge) or it may bring it closer in. Anyway, with the info they are releasing, I believe it's still too early to call.

OP. what about our moon? have you looked at trajectory?

I do not mean to be a dumazz, but how can we have a shot of it/the "comet" sideways? Isn't it coming rather toward us/the sun and would be seen more from looking at the front of it?

The size of the gas cloud is very significant. The comet will vaporize as it nears the sun, stretching the coma or gas cloud even further. This cloud is cyanide gas. A comet this close with a cloud (coma) this large should have a significant effect on earth. Also, it's proximatey when passing through could magnetically react with earth and be drawn in to us. It has professional astronomers very concerned. That's why they're ignoring it in the news. It is also possible this "comet" is not actually a comet at all. It is best imaged in infrared and is therefor very cool. It could be a different type object with a cometlike highly elliptical orbit.

Plus, if the object is as enormous as OP postulates, it would be like one gigantic bowling ball plowing through thousands of bowling pins once it hits the Asteroid Belt!!! Scatter shot, everywhere!

The gas would be so dispersed that it would do no harm to Earth.

You know, I have wondered about that also. With all the comets that have come by Earth in the last 10 years or so you would think that the asteroid belt would be punched full of holes with their passing, and all those asteroids went somewhere, I am very surprised that we haven't been hit yet by a large one.
