Former French President Jacques Chirac is set to face corruption charges over his alleged misuse of public funds for political gains when he was mayor of Paris.


Chirac, who is expected to go on trial on Monday, has been under criminal investigation over his alleged involvement in exploiting public finances to pay ghost workers' salaries to his political allies from 1977 to 1995 as the powerful mayor of Paris and leader of the Gaullist Party, AFP reported on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the lawyers of the 78-year-old ex-president have asked the judges that Chirac does not attend the first day of the trial, but he is expected to appear on Tuesday.

If found guilty, Chirac would face up to 10 years in jail and a fine of 150,000 euros ($210,000 ) on charges ranging from embezzlement to breach of trust.
