Researchers gear up for NASA radiation belt space mission
The University of Colorado Boulder will play a key role in a NASA mission launching this week to study how space weather affects Earth's two giant radiation belts known to be hazardous to satellites, astronauts and electronics systems on Earth.
The Radiation Belt Storm Probes, or RBSP, mission will study the invisible, doughnut-shaped regions above Earth known as the Van Allen radiation belts that are filled with high- energy electrons and protons, some of which are darting at roughly the speed of light. CU-Boulder, which will receive more than $18 million from NASA over the mission lifetime, designed and built an instrument to capture and measure the high-energy, or "killer," electrons and an intricate electronics package for another instrument suite to measure changes in the electric and magnetic fields in the belts.

Hello allsun

Loads better : )

Just a couple of things I wanted to show quickly..firstly around the unnumbered region/s in the South East that are turing onto the disc there is a crazy looking channel in the shape of a massive Heart, you can see the Heart shape very well if you watch this 48Hr Mpeg [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] There are Filaments within that channel that can be seen very well here [link to halpha.nso.edu] on all the channels, there are also loads of other Filaments all over the disc,of all different sizes.

You can see a Filament partially eject in the Mid-North of the disc here [link to halpha.nso.edu] .

Cool, just got to go and take my Dawgy,Major Thom round the Block quickly : )

We have two clearly defined Sunspot Regions that remain unnumbered still(slackers) [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov]

Magnetogram [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

And the Colourized Magnetogram [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] just above the Spot on the Limb is a very small area that also looks like it may yet develop into a small Sunspot itself,Imo.

I still don't understand why it takes them so long to Number Sunspots, esp when they are so clearly defined,I am sure it is due to pure slackerdom on their behalf.

If it were down to us here at GASA,we'd have them Numbered before they even rotate the Limb onto the Disc.

The Unnumbered Regions in the South-East look pretty awesome on the 171 Wavelength [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] nice arcing above them.

Also,in the 48Hr Mpeg [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] the 'Heart' shaped channel like area around the unnumbered Sunspots can be seen writhing with motion, seperate from the surrounding areas..looks pretty neat to moi and potentially potent.

With as quiet as it is, one would never know the sun does have 5 active regions, a huge coronal hole and a large filament (though this may have collapsed and melted away) on the earth facing side. Old 1530-1532 is coming back around and not sure but it may have fizzled out also.

[link to www.solarham.net]
Not totally flat lined, a small pulse is barely detected. I wonder if the threat of using the defibrillator shock paddles on it would do any good?

Yeah, bored and coming down with a cold/allergies so was looking for SOMETHING to kick off.

Is "World in Collision" a technical book? I read about 50+ books a year (okay, a lot more than that if my Kindle account is to be believed and 89% are PAW's) but am not fond of text books.

Then in April some of the team, including him, were sent down to the cape to complete the process. The launch is Friday, and he comes home next Wednesday. He was also part of the team that built the Stereo satellites. He is keeping his fingers crossed that he will be assigned to the new Solar Probe team that will be building the new satellites that will be sent to study the sun. Anyway, he has been in Florida since April, with only a couple weekend visits at home. So we both are excited that he will be back home next week. (I'm sure that is much more information than you wanted) lol Bet you'll never ask me another question. :-)
I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

Hello there Shenu : )

Was your hubby somehow involved in these projects to study the V.A Belts!?

That is so awesome, after you guys spend some quality time together can we get a list of questions together for him. Just joking, but that could be one of the first set of honest answers we'd been given!LOL

With as quiet as it is, one would never know the sun does have 5 active regions, a huge coronal hole and a large filament (though this may have collapsed and melted away) on the earth facing side. Old 1530-1532 is coming back around and not sure but it may have fizzled out also.

Morning all!

Not a text book, think of it as a summer stroll with your grandfather along a path through the garden. You sipping on ice tea, he puffing on a pipe and relaying info to you in a calm, easy to read manner that will have you going....

WTFmonkey2 why didnt i learn THAT at school.

Peace all

the one thing i see is this strange image is coming out of black....and it seems like several second of black.

now i have worked in control rooms before...this looks like a complete FU from in there.
this either if done for real and on purpose or a royal FU...this would be a job ender! no editors and producers just don't do that. now i personally have had those thoughts but....i still like to get payed.

now because it is coming out of a long section of black and not a cross-fade...it think this whole thing is faked.
plus i stepped through the transition to devilman...it was not just a cut or wipe...but a advanced 3d transition...things that are done in post editing not live switching.
but funny none the less!

INFO FROM SIDC - RWC BELGIUM 22 Aug 2012, 0947UT

The CACTus software package generated a halo CME alert on 2012 Aug 22 0566 UTC. After visual inspection of STEREO data, this event with a reported lift-off of Aug 20 21:28 UTC is confirmed but is determined back-sided, i.e. non-Earth directed and will thus have no geomagnetic effect. Small scale flare flickering in the active regions near the solar East limb suggest that flaring activity might be rising in the next few days, hence the SIDC ALL QUIET ALERT is halted. For the next 24 hours however we expect the chance for C-flaring activity however to be less than 50%. Also geomagnetic activity is expected to remain quiet.

We surely aren't feeling effects from the new CH are we?
Now on geomagnetic disturbance level will we receive such a dramatic spike from particle collisions or waves incoming?
