Just how many layers can successfully be deposited without the same amount of matter being subducted, yet the layering does not allow for subduction on that scale. The new material is not from subduction of existing material. It is from the process which forms stars and planets, Birkeland Currents confining in z-pinches which draws the plasma in from its environs. There exists enough plasma in our vicinity to power the aurora and Van Allen radiation belts. I saw earth just entered a strong solar wind yesterday (good potential for some auroras up my way) and remembered our discussion a while back about incoming CMEs possibly being a contributor to the larger quakes we saw. I briefly read some info about the new region soon to be making an earthside appearance, and I'm thinking if these plate shifts haven't had a chance to settle and we get hit with an M or X class flare, we could potentially see some higher magnitudes in the currently affected areas...
