2.5 2012/09/01 17:30:36 43.781 -121.316 0.0
NEWBERRY CALDERA AREA, OREGON

depth of 0.0 is surface

[link to volcanoes.usgs.gov]
Newberry may appear to be a sleeping volcano, but it is doing what volcanoes normally do by maintaining long periods of quiet that are punctuated by occasional eruptions. Seismometers measure earthquakes associated with magma and gas movement beneath the surface, while global positioning system (GPS) instruments measure swelling of a volcano due to magma accumulation underground.

just downgraded to a 1.8
[link to earthquake.usgs.gov]

have to keep it off that main big quake map, ya know ^^

Lots of small quakes under the volcanos near me, too- Mt. Lassen and the giant Mt. Shasta. I live close, so keep my eye on activity there, thanks for this post Nin.

Greets folks..so glad to see Ninz and Hugh here.
rockon

as expected, everything is skyrocketing:

epam protons
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

electrons are in extreme fraggled state

[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

he protons
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

haven't seen this one this high for a good long while:
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

and:

tectdh

[link to www.ips.gov.au]

warming to the oranges in wide areas already today.

as asked before....I was watching EVE yesterday when this all was going on, and I did not see an xray event. Plenty of light in the area, but not the fuzz that I have become used to on EVE after an xray event.

Hope everybody is well. Thanks everyone for keeping the thread hopping whilst I couldnt check in yesterday.

thanks for posting those :)
i will add to them how the Low Energy Protons are something to watch as they tell the story of how strong this CME is/will be
We can see the low energy protons on ACE here
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
Im taking a stab at this and saying thei will be a very strong "glancing" blow

new Space Weather Alert

Issue Time: 2012 Sep 01 1536 UTC

WATCH: Geomagnetic Storm Category G2 Predicted
Highest Storm Level Predicted by Day:
Sep 02: None (Below G1) Sep 03: G2 (Moderate) Sep 04: None (Below G1)
THIS SUPERSEDES ANY/ALL PRIOR WATCHES IN EFFECT
Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 55 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Power grid fluctuations can occur. High-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms.
Spacecraft - Satellite orientation irregularities may occur; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites is possible.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state.

G 2 - Kp = 6
Moderate
Power systems: high-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms, long-duration storms may cause transformer damage.

Spacecraft operations: corrective actions to orientation may be required by ground control; possible changes in drag affect orbit predictions.

Other systems: HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes, and aurora has been seen as low as New York and Idaho (typically 55° geomagnetic lat.)**.

watch here for the warning "Geomagnetic Sudden Impulse"
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
That is when you know the CME has arrivied at ACE
Ace is around 20min away from earth
so whatever you see hit ACE, will arrive at earth about 20min later

you can now see the CME cloud on the 3rd frame for the HI2
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]

the blacker areas on the image are of more dence areas
the more black, the more dence

DAMN
hiding

the good new is that its still a bit out there, so we have more time to go over data on this one

you can look here to see where Earth is on the HI2 images
[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

the very front of the CME cloud will hit soon, but its the blacker more dence area behind it that has me a bit worried

wow thats by far the most proton activity we've had on solarsoft in weeks (although thats not saying much its been so calm).

also, just kind of glad were not in the centre of this ejection's path! not that that means we're gonna get off scot free...

however i have a lot more faith in nin's method of analyzing each data point as it gets updated rather than putting faith in one catch all model run!

looking at todays movie on SDO in the gold filter, we can see there is some very active magnetic activity going on around sunspot 1560
also looking at the magnetogram i can see some major fast growth within this region today, as well as connectivity between this region and the sunspots in the southeastern region
if this continues, we could see a good sized flare very soon, as well as a possible CME coming from this area
[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

wow, also something else i just noticed
look at the movie for all of today in the Red filter, and watch the entire top right (northwest) section
you can see the wave of plasms that was from the filament ejection in the southeast (bottom left), then a few min later you can see that wave go up over the whole top right
like a wave of plasma went over the whole earth facing side of the sun with this event

 Quoting: NiNzrez

1st time i have personaly ever seen this happen

Get out the coffee.

Nin, I almost feel ashamed that I get to experience this with you after all the time and effort you put in compared to my almost zero.

I said "almost". bump

the new HI2 image is out and it appears there is even MORE dence plasma behind it all
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]

for a reminder, here is the image directly prior to the one above
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]

open each in new tabs and flip between the 2 and you will get a better idea whats headed out away from the sun

looking here at where Earth is
[link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]
then looking at the 2 HI2 images, i would say based on speed we can see this CME moving on the images, we will see the front of it arrive within around 2hrs

please keep in mind though, the very front of this CME is NOT the most dence part! and the inital hit we see will NOT indicate how bad this one will hit us
it is the plasme BEHIND the inital front that needs a close watch
