I don't know for sure what went in front of the lens of the camera in that shot, I'm pretty sure there is a simple explanation, however, the fact he has disabled all comments on the video puzzles me, as he's asking for answers ???

On Wednesday September 5th a group of California high school students celebrated the 35th anniversary of the launch of Voyager 1 in an unusual way; they launched me to the Edge of Space. I traveled to the top of our planet's atmosphere on board a suborbital helium balloon.

I was wearing headphones. Why? Because I was listening to the Golden iPod, the modern-day successor to the Golden Records bolted to the side of the Voyager probes. The students are updating the Golden Records with 21st-century content that the students would like to send into the cosmos. This was just a test flight; in 2013, they hope to launch the Golden iPod into Earth orbit onboard a CubeSat they are building...

Hello Splintersun

It looks like 1569 may have just popped a little Ejecta on the H alpha - Big Bear [link to halpha.nso.edu] <--- Looks like it whipped a lash of Filament before reeling it back in again,to me it looks powerful enough to have caused a small ejection.

Mauna Loa [link to halpha.nso.edu] .

Anyhoo'..1569 and the Trailing Region look pretty close to becoming new BG Spots that cover quite a area between them.

Should be good to see what the inter-play between the Two will be considering their proximity to each other.

Hope everyone is Goodsun

I've been waiting,we've had several lined up. Its a little unnerving to have such constant electron spikes without much of a solar wind from these CHs. An extant of electron energy without solar events is usually a good sign of the max ramping up. The sun is going through some exfoliation, so to speak.

Hi all!! Here for the night shift, holding down the fort with Splinter and Shad, Hugh and Psy. Thanks for the green from you nice folks, I'm getting up there where I can pin a thread or something, yeah! Hope you feel better soon Cesium, miss you Nerd, where you been at? Hi to all the lurkers too and everyone else that makes this thread fun and like a little family. I still think 1564 might throw a big M or a little X on its way off to the back and we'll get a partial charge. Was looking at some soho movies from 1999 and 2000, last max and some of them are unbelievable, the sun can pump it out. So just saying hi to the morning team and have a nice day.

The "Numbers Guy" at NOAA took the day of yesterday, so everything got screwed-up again....aaaah, the joys of bureaucracy. Anyway, AR1570 is a tiny dot in the SW which may be invisible by now and AR1571 is the big spot in the far Southeast. But the big news is the growth of AR1569 as it moves toward center-disk. Kudos to Spittin' Cesium for mentioning that tongue plasma licking around 1569. This is a sure sign of a very strong storm brewing. Be prepared to see some big fireworks from this region soon (I'm thinking a strong M or maybe even an X-flare if it's growth continues.

i just read an article about NASA's new mars rover....
if they do find water on mars and use it nice probe to investigate it...
well they will introduce earth based microbes and bacteria to the planet mars!
as it turns out some high level brain user went into the clean room....NOT clean and installed a part they had forgotten to install!
then of course they launched it and somehow it did make to the surface of mars.
it is bad enough we humans are destroying earth....why must some feel obligated to go after mars now!

Hi Hugh, TS was the first to notice the tongue, but it doesn't matter. I agree with 1569 and its growth , is this the one we've been looking for, seems ready to expand just need that dense bi polar spot to show and a good penumbra.

Glad to have you around, your much faster with the info than I. I've got myself spread to thin and am wearing thin. I'm moving away from so much on GLP that doesn't have relevance. Just trying to stick to what 'really' matters, anywho thanks for always being there.
Constant electron spike is showing that old SOl is letting go of energy without a good solar wind,we're getting close to max pickup. I'm seeing an event of some size happening soon!

Well, thanks, ..it's nice to be appreciated -and kudos to TS, too! The few times we've seen the "tongue-like action" it's always been a prelude to at least one big flare. And AR1569 is nearing the "danger zone" for geoeffectiveness. The next 5 or six days we'll be sitting ducks for whatever this region throws at us.

Also, watching the SDO movie-maker, I noticed a big flare and a small CME on the northeast limb. It barely made a ripple in the x-ray flux and I can't even find a sunspot on the Intensitygram. It's possibly another region still beyond the northeast limb and soon coming our way.

SDO/AIA 304a image of flare on northeast limb:

Followed by a CME there:

I think its 1564, I just said a little while ago I thought we'd get an M or a little X out of it, C2.2 and climbing.

Yes, 1564 is acting up and lots action and loops seen over the east limb on the SDO images.

Also, the large, thick filament in the north (about 40 degrees west) seems to be working loose and ready to fly off. If that happens there's a good chance for an Earth-directed CME blast.

Learmonth H-alpha movie shows filament loosening:

Gotta get some sleep now....but the x-rays are goin' up again.

i just read an article about NASA's new mars rover....
if they do find water on mars and use it nice probe to investigate it...
well they will introduce earth based microbes and bacteria to the planet mars!
as it turns out some high level brain user went into the clean room....NOT clean and installed a part they had forgotten to install!
then of course they launched it and somehow it did make to the surface of mars.
it is bad enough we humans are destroying earth....why must some feel obligated to go after mars now!

Mars infection happened already in the 70s. First Russian landers were not desinfected at all. Mars is full of Russian microbes. It is their planet as they get their microbes there first ... hf
