Was out there for about an hour, no luck, I was hoping I might catch them when I saw the live shots from Slippery Rock Pa. and Ohio, but nadda, boo hoo. Did see three meteors (falling stars) which is more than when I sit out for a meteor shower, lol. SB you are soooo lucky. Also, moon was soo bright it almost hurt to look through the binoculars, and Jupiter is magnificent with her moons.

So where's Cesium, SnAkEbItE, TS66, Shada et al? Shouldn't someone be sending mail to T-Bar about now, hehe. This is why we watch, because no one KNOWS what's goin' to happen. NASA is always backtracking to find out WHY things happened the way they did. I had a hunch this could be strong because of the similarities to the Oct. 2011 event which caught everybody off-guard. But now I know better than to make a firm prediction because no 2 CMEs are exactly alike. I hope T-Bar logs in and humbles himself to those he belittled. Knowledge is a double-edged sword.

Gee Hugh, that's funny, coming from a guy that had given up on it a few hours ago. I didn't give up, or waffle. I made a prediction over two days ago and stuck to it. As it turns out, it was pretty much correct. Do you really think it'a a big deal if it hits a 7 verses a 6? I don't. It's still listed as a 6 at the stations here [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] only the Estimation is at 7. I really couldn't care less if I was off by one KP, it definitely still isn't a "Big One". So hey, I might have been off by one two days ago. There you go, I'm humbled.

Space Weather Message Code: ALTK07
Serial Number: 86
Issue Time: 2012 Oct 01 0305 UTC

ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 7
Threshold Reached: 2012 Oct 01 0300 UTC
Synoptic Period: 0000-0300 UTC
Active Warning: Yes
NOAA Scale: G3 - Strong
Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.

So lesson learned, none of us know it all hf

Also, case in point that a C class filament eruption can rival any X flare we've seen so far this maximum.

So now, can we be nice to each other on the playground ??? We all stand a chance to learn something wink

Power Outage in USA on Monday, 01 October, 2012 at 04:29 (04:29 AM) UTC.

Description
Power has been restored to about 17,000 Xcel Energy customers who were affected Sunday evening by an outage in the Greeley area. Xcel Energy spokeswoman Michelle Aguayo said at least 16,900 customers in Greeley, Garden City, Evans, LaSalle and surrounding areas were affected. She said the outage originated at a Greeley substation at 6:18 p.m. The outage lasted a little more than two hours. As of Sunday night, Aguayo said crews were still trying to determine the cause of the outage, but it did not appear to be weather-related. Xcel Energy’s outage hotline was inundated with calls. Aguayo said the company encourages customers to call and leave messages. Paul Sadd, a mechanic at North Colorado Medical Center, said the hospital was running on emergency power during the outage. He said several people were stuck in elevators, but workers were able to get them out safely. Aguayo said Xcel works closely with large customers like hospitals and law enforcement agencies to ensure that they have back-up power resources.

Yes, I learned there are some people who think there is some kind of major difference between an estimated value of 6.9 and 7.0. Most people would roll their eyes at that one. Somehow everything changes with that tenth of an estimated point...ok...if you say so. I'm still calling this a normal event, looks pretty normal here [link to umtof.umd.edu] . Looks kinda wimpy really, the speed never got over around 400 km/s? There was only a brief estimation of a 7? [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Kinda hard to call this a "Big One". I know what I'm going to call it. There were some people throwing some nasty words around here, I wasn't one of them. Go back and check.

Good Morning Everyone.

Shewwww I am really dragging this morning. I was heading to bed last night and thought I'd take one more peek at the charts, eventhough things had been fairly quiet. Welllllllll I opened one of my favorite kp-index sites and Holy Cow. lol There it was. I almost fell off my chair. Well that did it...no sleep for me last night. Ok, ok, maybe not 'no' sleep, but very little. Probably about an hour. I spent most of the night right here. So, this morning I have a new best friend ----> coffee4 my coffee.
I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.
