A small Filament eruption of some kind from 1598 [link to halpha.nso.edu] in the Mid-South.

Not much really.

Here in 94 Angstroms(Extreme UV/Soft X-ray) [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] and composite image [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] The Red Colour you see on images in that composite are related to more violent Temps./Events.

Why you say this amigo?

put it this way,you can have all the scientific knowledge in the world but with out insight it will not add up to a hill of beans,i have prepared for a full grid failure for over 5 years now......

Basically,Solar-wise.there really is'nt much going on at all, neither is there in Geo-space.

It is very,very,very quiet.

Which for moi means too quiet.

We need some action..or at least a little SW would be nice.

Good morning everyone, SC that smilie was pretty good, made me LOL.

TS the storm has slowly by us here in SE FL but the last 2 days its been crazy. Not dangerous as it was far off shore, but a wind event for about 36 hours and its still whipping around every so often. The waves were in the 11-12 foot range yesterday when we are normally about 1 foot range.

The gusts were wild, I drove over the bridge to the barrier island to check out the ocean and felt my car wanting to take flight!! Tell your kids to be safe and take warnings seriously, Sandy has some power behind her!

Thanks for the great analysis and udpates, as always, great to see TT back on board!

Coronal Mass Ejection
A bright Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is now visible in the latest STEREO Ahead COR2 images. The plasma cloud looks like it might be Earth directed. With no Solar Flares detected, this may have been the result of a prominence eruption. More information to follow.

been looking at this graph of 400 years of historical sunspot observations

[link to upload.wikimedia.org]

puzzled by the maunder minumum and the reason for it

The earliest known working telescopes appeared in 1608 and are credited to Hans Lippershey. Among many others who claimed to have made the discovery were Zacharias Janssen, a spectacle-maker in Middelburg, and Jacob Metius of Alkmaar. The design of these early refracting telescopes consisted of a convex objective lens and a concave eyepiece. Galileo used this design the following year. In 1611, Johannes Kepler described how a telescope could be made with a convex objective lens and a convex eyepiece lens and by 1655 astronomers such as Christiaan Huygens were building powerful but unwieldy Keplerian telescopes with compound eyepieces. Hans Lippershey is the earliest person documented to have applied for a patent for the device.

then looked at volcanic activity for the period

hekla erupted 1597 VEI 4
katla erupted 1612 VEI 4
katla erupted 1625 VEI 5
furnas erupted 1630 VEI 5
Vesuvius erupted 1631 VEI 5?
santorini erupted 1650 VEI 4?
katla erupted 1660 VEI 4
hekla erupted 1693 VEI 4

these are just the 'local' eruptions
there were many more all over the world, a couple with a VEI of 6

made me wonder if there was a maunder minimum because no one could actually observe the sun during this period?

Brown Dwarves Exhibit Auroral Activity-[/b

Such interactions don’t occur on every ultra-cool dwarf — only 12 (out of roughly 200 observed) are known to produce intense radio emissions. These objects all have one thing in common: rapid rotation. They spin dizzyingly fast, completing a rotation every few hours. Many of the radio signals observed have a periodic beat, likely due to the objects’ rotation.

Analogs of radio-emitting stellar runts can be found closer to home: Jupiter and Saturn both generate strong magnetic fields and complete rotations once every 10 hours or so. Some of these planets’ radio emission has been linked to auroral activity, suggesting that similar processes may be important in the ultra-cool dwarfs as well.

evening everyone :)

We have a Earth directed CME
[link to stereo-ssc.nascom.nasa.gov]
it would appear that this came from a prominance lift off in the northern region around sunspot 1600 and 1596
this is not the same CME talked about yesterday that is most likley earth directed
[link to spaceweather.com]

you can see where the sunspots are here
[link to www.solen.info]

and just so everyone know, there is a continued alert for the electron event that began on Oct 9th. this makes 18 straight days with elevated electrons
Issue Time: 2012 Oct 26 0805 UTC

CONTINUED ALERT: Electron 2MeV Integral Flux exceeded 1000pfu
Continuation of Serial Number: 1974
Begin Time: 2012 Oct 09 1015 UTC
Yesterday Maximum 2MeV Flux: 1729 pfu
Potential Impacts: Satellite systems may experience significant charging resulting in increased risk to satellite systems.
