I thought maybe it would be a good idea to outlay what it is the VHF Riometer measures and how so I have snipped a little for the lurkers -

Snipped -

'What is a riometer?
A riometer is a passive scientific instrument used to observe ionospheric absorption, particularly absorption at altitudes less than 110 km caused by electron precipitation. The word riometer stands for Relative Ionospheric Opacity Meter'.

'How does a Riometer Work?
Riometers measure the strength of radio noise originating from stars or galaxies and arriving at the earth after passing through the ionosphere - The sky is filled with stars and galaxies that emit a broad spectrum of radio noise and the noise is strong enough to be picked up using sensitive receiving equipment, this noise varies on a predictable basis as the Earth rotates.

Depending on the amount of ionization present, radio signals passing through the ionosphere may suffer losses (or become weaker) in a process called absorption. Imagine the ionosphere as a set of louvers. If it is disturbed, the louvers close and signals arriving from outside of the earth's vicinity do not pass through very well. If the ionosphere is "quiet," the louvers are open fully and signals pass through easily,if there were no sources of absorption in the earth's atmosphere, the cosmic noise measured by the riometer would be exactly the same at corresponding times during each successive Sidereal day. The "Quiet Day Curve" is this expected, or "no-absorption" diurnal noise level. (In this context,"quiet" means that the ionosphere is undisturbed by solar events.) Any difference between the actual measurement and the Quiet Day Curve is attributed to ionospheric absorption
'

Flare was here 8 seconds after eruption, plasma from the cme may get to us in the next couple days, will be a shallow particle field and may give us a small storm. If it had been earth facing we may have had a problem!

See if you can find NOAA AR11617 on this realtime photo-

Joint USAF/NOAA Solar Region Summary

This is kind of shenanigans which bring the "Daily Sunspot Number" into such disrepute. I can barely see a wisp of a dot for 1617, yet in the NE there's at least 2 or 3 new UN-NUMBERED regions with obvious spots staring at me for two days. Maybe they're training a new chimp for the coming holidays, LOL.

But I agree fully, the Sunspot count is often a joke, perhaps they use broken old Human Eyeballs to locate these areas instead of a Magnetogram or other imaging - I can see quite a few small spots center disc that are not Numbered.

What do you make of the close to the Equator region on the East limb?

what is the blow up to the side of earth in the 3rd frame?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27375240

Flare was here 8 seconds after eruption, plasma from the cme may get to us in the next couple days, will be a shallow particle field and may give us a small storm. If it had been earth facing we may have had a problem!

Woweee. The last 5 recorded C-flares have all come from different active regions. That's an unusual occurrence and a piece of suntard trivia if there ever was one, haha.

Not sure if this was posted here yet- the Solarsoft/SDO composite movie of the huge filament double-eruption yesterday:

Cool : )

The region just below 1616 looks like it's getting ready to fire up a Channel Eruption [link to halpha.nso.edu] I'd watch that One.

See if you can find NOAA AR11617 on this realtime photo-

[link to jsoc.stanford.edu]

I'll give you hint...here's the coordinates-

Joint USAF/NOAA Solar Region Summary
SRS Number 322 Issued at 0030Z on 17 Nov 2012
Report compiled from data received at SWO on 16 Nov

This is kind of shenanigans which bring the "Daily Sunspot Number" into such disrepute. I can barely see a wisp of a dot for 1617, yet in the NE there's at least 2 or 3 new UN-NUMBERED regions with obvious spots staring at me for two days. Maybe they're training a new chimp for the coming holidays, LOL.

I agree Hugh,1617 is a spark and not much more.

1610 is beginning to look a little more lively on EVE as she approaches NiNz Corner [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] she may pop before even going over the limb yet!
