Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
I was reading through this thread and came across this post. Look at these pix on Helioviewer. WTH!!

I do not remember these being discussed here last week, however, I was not active on the thread on the 27th-28th.

If it was discussed can someone tell me what the outcome was?

If it was not discussed can everyone take a look at these pics and advise? It sure looks like something is sitting next to the sun in these. I am not fear mongering just pointing out what the pic shows.

Thread: WTF!!! is happening with Sun right now check this image from NASA (Page 3)

Hi Isis, Thanks for responding. Yep it appears to be unknown at this time.

Good morning all.
I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

I hope so but the light reflection on the object leads me to believe otherwise.

And one of the flares goes in front of it.

I haven't been able to directly link SOHO shots so ... here is my attempt to do so again. But if the link doesn't work, follow the instructions below it to look for yourselves.

You'll see another lens issue at 8 o'clock. You will also see a tremendous amount of debris around the sun be projected out. This is fairly typical especially during and active period.

Take a look hf

[link to sohodata.nascom.nasa.gov]

Instruction:

1)Got to [link to sohodata.nascom.nasa.gov]

2)Highlight LASCO2

3) check off "movie"

4) copy paste start date 20121001 then end date 20121003

5) hit search

The movie will load, and you can view it for yourself, always good to learn for future use.

If you'd like to zoom in or out use ctrl + or -

Hope that helps answer your questions. hf

Good morning Tink hf

The first you posted I think most would classify as an "artifact", although I have yet to know what that means myself !!! LOL

The second 2 from the end of November are in exactly the same spot, shape and size as it was 10/1-10/5 in the video above, which confirms what I believe to be a damaged lens.

Nice catch, it does appear to do so, but I would think if there was damage to a lens, anything that would go past would be somewhat distorted, like looking through a chip in a windshield, and would appear to bounce off, but return to a straight line trajectory as soon as it passed the "chip"

I'm no expert for sure, but have been watching the sun for a of few years now .... and everyone has to look at the evidence and come to their own conclusions ... those are mine wink

Re: SOLAR WATCH * 312 M & 25 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)
NASA's explanation of "artifacts" seen in images (look a little like a, would be HUGE spaceship) of the sun

"In these HI-1 images, a daily median is used as the best near-real-time method to get CME enhancement. This results in dark spots from planets such as Mercury. When we derive the background, we do an interpolation between two daily median images. Since we make these images the day we receive them, we do not have a daily median for the next day, just the previous day. When the interpolation is done between the previous day and the current day and there is a feature like a planet, this introduces dark (negative) artifacts in the background where the planet was on the previous day, which then show up as bright areas in the enhanced image."

You are more or less correct 66,this has been on the Cornagraphs before,it is a small fiber on the CCD Camera like this [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] <---About - Close up image of a small fiber on the surface of the CCD camera for COR2 on STEREO Ahead. Click on the image to see the location on the detector. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Also, the other artifacts on the EUVI Images movies are due to Cosmic Rays, example [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] and [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] About the First image - Two cosmic rays distorted by the high compression factors applied to beacon data, as seen by the STEREO Behind EUVI telescope on January 18, 2010 [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] and the Second image - Same cosmic rays as seen in the full resolution data. Many more cosmic ray events are visible. Only the brightest two show up in the beacon image. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] .

Anytime you catch a anomaly on the Coronagraphs first check here [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] and cross reference your image with the examples listed.

That bright object is Antares,a massive Red Giant Star in the region of Scorpius,it is ginormous with a Radius of 300 Million Kms - That is apparently the same size(a little larger,73 Million Kms larger)as the orbit traced by Mars around our own Sol!

For comparison, our own Sun is 0.7(ish)Million Kms in Radius.

Here is a Wiki about Antares [link to en.wikipedia.org] .

**Solar** pole reversal update:

[link to s16.postimage.org]

Two snapshots, the first being the state of the poles two months ago, the second being the latest update, yesterday. You can clearly see the progress of the pole reversal.

The south pole's equatorward latitudes have weakened from around +25 uT in fall 2011 to around 0 uT this fall.

The north pole's polemost latitudes have weakened from -35 uT to 0 uT during the same period. We can also see that the equatorward latitudes of the north pole have strengthened greatly since last year, after having capped out at +10 uT the last two springs, readings have already matched that high and we are still months away from spring, when the readings will max out!

All in all very promising signs from both poles that this jammed reversal is beginning to figure itself out.

(source of graphs, data [link to www.leif.org] [link to wso.stanford.edu] )
