Can someone tell me what is going on with the Solar Wind Density? [link to www.spaceweatherlive.com]

I have never seen this chart look like this. I will save a screenprint, in case it changes. This table usually looks solid green. I am seeing a red triangle??
 Quoting: muse_1111

Nice catch, muse, it seems to be another case of bad data glitch from ACE. I see a crazy reading and then a gap around 15:30z.

[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

Since we Earthlings have only one other detector in that neighborhood of space, I always check the SOHO SW data for verification. The SOHO detectors show no big spikes and no density above 15 p/cu.cm today. Both spacecraft are in the old age now and occasionally have fits of dementia, haha.

SOHO SW data:

[link to umtof.umd.edu]
alien11
 Quoting: Hugh M Eye

its not marked as bad data though hugh
it IS valid data if you look at the top of any ACE data list, you will see this

# Status(S): 0 = nominal data, 1 to 8 = bad data record, 9 = no data

this value is shown in the column just to the left of the Density value amount
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

this is how we find out if it is or is not bad data, we cant just assume becuase its such an insane number in the spike that it Must then be bad data

so, looking at the data value for the data, we see the 2 times in question, 15:28 UTC and 15:29 UTC are data marked as "0"
) indicates "Normal/Good" data
if it was bad data, it would be market with a value between 1 and 8
 Quoting: NiNzrez

Did not know that, Thanks!
 Quoting: shadasonic

this why one must be willing to except that there might be changes going on.
it is one thing to say this happens all the time and it is normal.
it is another when one says this did not happen because it was not normal.

at best 600 good years our civilization has on the sun.....now who many years has the planet been in orbit around the sun.

what is normal?

The Geminid Meteor shower peaks today and/or tomorrow (check your local stations). Here's a few ALL-SKY CAMs for those who'd rather watch meteors on their PC than out in the cold dark of night.

My Favorite is Mt. Lemmon in Arizona:

[link to www.lpl.arizona.edu]

NASA's fireball network (mostly in the SE USA):

[link to fireballs.ndc.nasa.gov]

Tromso, Norway:

[link to polaris.nipr.ac.jp]

Another from AZ (kinda out of focus tho):

[link to skycam.mmto.arizona.edu]

I lost over 200 links recently (out of 729), so if you have any other all-sky cams please add 'em to the list.

I also found this webpage about the meteorites found a couple months ago from that bright SanFran Fireball. In case one lands in yer yard you'll know what to look for, haha.

The previous 27-day solar rotation produced 11 events of M 1 or greater. We have 0 so far this rotation. Something's gotta give soon or there'll be a doom shortage for the 2012 Solstice, LOL.

[link to translate.google.de]

The earlier filament activation near mid-disk produced a beautiful arcade loop between the magnetic poles of AR1629 as well as the large 2-ribbon flare. Strangely, there was nary a blip in the x-ray flux.

SDO Composite images:

Most of that filament is still flagellating and doing a dance as Isis suggested. I expect it will be gone when I wake up tomorrow...

Was there anything strange with the Sun yesterday (12/12) around 10:30 CET?
I took a short break from work, and went outside to get a cigaret and I looked up and could look directly at the Sun without getting blinded. There was no clouds, and it looked just as if you look at the moon. Could see the round form so clear and sharp.
I called my coworker to come watch it because it looked so beautiful over the snow landscape, and he was amazed too and took some pictures with his phone, but they came out blurry.
Anyway it only last for around 5-10 minutes and gone again to normal - it was almost as if it was an eclipse or something.
I don't recall seeing anything like that in my 30 years.

Can someone tell me what is going on with the Solar Wind Density? [link to www.spaceweatherlive.com]

I have never seen this chart look like this. I will save a screenprint, in case it changes. This table usually looks solid green. I am seeing a red triangle??
 Quoting: muse_1111

Here is a screenshot of it, in case the charts change.
IMAGE ( [link to i45.tinypic.com] )

It looks like the triangle on the Solar Wind - Density chart is in direct inverse to the drop on the Solar Wind - Speed chart. Does this mean the solar wind got extremely dense, but had no speed? I am also looking for a legend on the chart color. I haven't seen red on this chart before; it is usually green.
 Quoting: muse_1111

when i click on the "more data" button below the density chart that they have, it directs me to the ACE data charts
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
i see there could possibly be a spike around just before the 16:00UTC mark

so lets go look directly at the ACE density data for today
it looks like there is a gap in data right around that same time
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
that gap is seen on all the ACE charts
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
but when you look at this chart
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
we can see that the data gap occured directly after a large spike in Density and sharp drop in Radial Speed
one more chart for this
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

so lets look at the direct ACE density numbers for around that time. Here is the full day list for today
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

scroll to the 15:28UTC mark in the left collumn
there we can see a spike in Density begin @ 15:28UTC
Solar Wind Speed: 265.1
Density: 48.7

this is a Drop in sloar wind speed from 281.7, that it was 1 min before, down to 265.1
with an increase in Density from 2.3 that it was 1 min before, up to 48.7

then 1min later @ 15:29, we see the very large spike
Solar Wind Speed: 241.4
Density: 109.3 (!!! WOW !!!)

this makes within 2min time, a solar wind drop of around 40km/sec and a increase in proton density of around 107!

then we had the data loss, the gap we seen
and when it came back online, all is back to where it was prior to the spike
 Quoting: NiNzrez

Excellent reporting, but what's your interpretation, what do you think happened?????? The suspense is killing me lol
 Quoting: Isis One

thanks for reminding me
i was wanting to do a follow up on that info, but got caught up with current events

The heliospheric plasma/current sheet represents an additional, non-coronal-hole component of the slow solar wind, where the proton density peaks and the flow velocity and He/H ratio dip to their minimum values (Borrini et al. 1981). The plasma sheet material and its associated density inhomogeneities (“blobs”) originate from inside helmet streamers, presumably being ejected following reconnection between closed and open field lines at the streamer cusps (Wang et al. 1998; Crooker et al. 2004).

As expected, the source regions at sunspot maximum are concentrated in the activity latitudes and are characterized by relatively slow wind, large charge-state ratios, and strong footpoint fields.
[link to iopscience.iop.org]

In the ascending phase of the solar activity cycle and at solar maximum, the average solar wind speed slows, as the polar coronal holes shrink (and even disappear) and the high-speed flows narrow and weaken. At the same time, the ambient solar wind flow is increasingly perturbed by coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
[link to pluto.space.swri.edu]

oh shit now i just got lost in reading for the last hour and forgot i had this open to paste info in haha
some very interesting physics reading i have ran across
let me get back to this
i was trying to find this one paticular article that talking in simpler terms about at solarmax, the low latitude coronal holes, slow solar wind with density spikes and the disapearance of polar coronal holes
well, i have posted it in here before, but will never find the link in my mess of Favs that needed re organized a long long time ago and never got done
i know there has to be some longtimers on here that remember us talking about this
i will do what i can to find the info
now, im back to reading any one of the 30 new open tabs i have haha
