SOLAR WATCH * 251 M & 18 X FLARES starting 3-7-2011 (Updated Daily)

Expect the geophysical conditions to be unsettled for today and tomorrow. we will see fluctuations in the solar winds, protons and the magnetic field.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels for days one and two (23 - 24 December) due to effects from a co-rotating interaction region and coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Quiet conditions are expected to return on day three (25 December) as CH HSS effects wane.

Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) form as a consequence of the compression of the solar wind at the interface between fast speed streams and slow streams. Dynamic interaction of solar wind streams is a general feature of the heliospheric medium; when the sources of the solar wind streams are relatively stable, the interaction regions form a pattern which corotates with the Sun

I'm pretty sure it is just shadow art. I will get a better eyepiece for my telescope and check that area once our weather decides to clear up.

A recent post on ACE News related to CIRs-

Corotating interaction regions (CIRs) form when a stream of fast solar wind overtakes a parcel of slow wind that was emitted from the Sun at an earlier time. This interaction creates a compression region that corotates with the Sun and can strengthen to form shocks that accelerate particles. CIRs are the primary producer of the tens of keV/n to several MeV/n particles measured at 1 AU during periods of low solar activity.

The very cold air kept in place gets squeezed out by high pressure... it evacuates in the direction of North America causing a short period of very cold weather... bad part is, it leaves the pole warmer at a time of year it needs to refreeze... expect high sea levels to continue and get worse at a fast pace.
