Secondary Cosmic Ray Particles
Primary cosmic particle collides with a molecule of atmosphere.

The Moon's cosmic ray shadow, as seen in secondary muons detected 700 m below ground, at the Soudan 2 detector

The Moon as seen by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, in gamma rays of greater than 20 MeV. These are produced by cosmic ray bombardment of its surface.[16]

When cosmic rays enter the Earth's atmosphere they collide with molecules, mainly oxygen and nitrogen. The interaction produce a cascade of lighter particles, a so-called air shower.[17] All of the produced particles stay within about one degree of the primary particle's path. Typical particles produced in such collisions are neutrons, charged mesons e.g. positive and negative pions and kaons. Some of these subsequently decay into muons, which are able to reach the surface of the Earth, and even penetrate for some distance into shallow mines. The muons can be easily detected by many types of particle detectors, such as cloud chambers, bubble chambers or scintillation detectors. Several muons observed by separated detectors at the same instant indicates that they have been produced in the same shower event.

Cosmic rays impacting other planetary bodies in the Solar System are detected indirectly by observing high energy gamma ray emissions by gamma-ray telescope. These are distinguished from radioactive decay processes by their higher energies above about 10 MeV.
Health Hazards of Secondary Cosmic Rays

High energy secondary cosmic ray neutrons and other secondary cosmic ray particles comprises the components of cosmic rays damaging to humans, on Earth or in a plane. Outside Earth's magnetic field, the primary cosmic rays constitute the health hazard.

CME particles are 1/10,000 as energetic as cosmic rays, also CRs have the fastest particle speeds ever recorded and penetrate the magnetosphere and reach deep into the earth. Their ability to penetrate matter is far greater than most energetic , electromagnetic radiation. And like you mentioned the protons and alpha particles easily breakdown into secondary radiation, GRBs can be ELES!

We had another C-flare from AR1640 which is now classified as Beta-Gamma-Delta. The X-ray background level has risen a bit today and more spots are coming around in the SE. As we knew 2 days ago, NOAA has found that AR1644 is more than one region.

Solar activity was low. The largest flare of the period was a C1 at

magnetically complex spot group on the visible disk with a
Eai/beta-gamma-delta spot classification. Growth and consolidation of
the larger leading and trailing spots was observed in this Region. New
flux emerged near S13W05 and was numbered as Region 1645. As Region
1644 (N14E48) rotated further into view, it was determined using
magnetogram imagery that the trailing spot was actually a separate
spotted region and was numbered as Region 1646 (N13E57
). The rest of
the spotted regions were relatively stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were
observed during the period.

Driving me a little batty too ..... I don't remember a data gap ever being this long.

AND there's really no excuse. The still shots are up to date.

Take a look at that filament in the SW quadrant ..

[link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]
 Quoting: TS66

How long would you say that filament is? 3/4 of a million kms?
 Quoting: Isis One

The circumference of the sun is about 2,713,412 miles/4,366,813 kms, and I'd say it's about 1/8th of the circumference, so about ..... 339,176 miles or 545,852 kms long ???
 Quoting: TS66

wow keep in mind
The average distance from Earth to the Moon is 384,400 km (238,900 mi).
so that would be going out past our moon!
 Quoting: psyoptics

Thanks TS, good reference Psy, can you imagine if this were to let lose toward Earth?

you can clearly see how bright and active the SS are that are not earth facing....we sit and watch ...i think we will see these new ones follow suit.
