Hugh/66/NiNz - Do you have any idea why this [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] is'nt affecting us at all?

Is it passing just below us as it looks on here [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] ?

I don't have time right now to go into the details of why that solen chart is mistaken to judge reversals based on WSO filtered data, but for those that want to know when one of the Sun's poles have reversed, use Leif Svalgaard's chart instead [link to www.leif.org]

The Sun's north pole is closer to reversing than the south; Here's the easiest way to tell when it has reversed: Look at the blue line on the left-hand Leif chart linked above, it represents the north pole. See how it is crossing the boundary between negative and positive polarity, going up past zero and then back down below again?

It hasn't reversed polarity until the line stops dipping back below zero every pass. That's when we'll know that the actual pole has converted. There's a decent chance that this September (the next pass of the north pole) the readings stay above zero instead of dipping back below like it did in Sept 2011 and Sept 2012. If it the readings stay above zero this time, we'll know it has reversed! ;)
 Quoting: madajs

Hey M there are those out there thinking the magnetics may stay the same, whats your take on that. I hadn't heard anything like that until recently?
 Quoting: shadasonic

Hey shad, when you say that do you mean some are thinking the poles won't flip?

If so, I'd have to disagree. At present both poles are making good progress towards reversal.

The south pole was showing a lack of progress the last couple of years, but that is no longer the case.

NOAA has numbered 1 of the 3 new active regions then broke for lunch, LOL. It's hard work donchya know? Perhaps the others will be numbered before quittin' time. AR1680 is in the far SE (S28E42) and it's a recently-born, growing region.

AR1680-
:south28:

A larger newly-born region is further west at about 13 degrees south.

AR168(1?)-
:south13:

And in the northeast we have the shrinking alpha spot, old 1665, still hangin' in there.

NOAA Discussion-
.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was low. The largest x-ray event of the period was a C2
flare at 24/1435 UTC. This flare originated from old Region 1678 that
had rotated well past the west limb, yet was still captured by the
GOES-15 SXI imagery. A new spot region, 1680 (S28E42) Dao/Beta, was
numbered during the period.
The only other numbered spot regions, Region
1675 (N13W83), a Hsx/Alpha spot group, and Region 1676 (S18W32), a
Axx/Alpha spot group, continued to decay. There were two coronal mass
ejections (CMEs) observed during the period, however neither appear to
be Earth-directed.

Howdy, 66hf, yes I was watching them develop yesterday and was surprised that NOAA's Solar Region Summary only list 2 spots last night (75 & 76). The Heliographic EUVI images also show 2 or 3 new AR's have formed far-side south-east and should be coming around to join these in 2-3 days.

Sunspot 1665 aka 1681-2?

Just rotating into view today. Rather active/large region (probably 3-4 earths wide). 40 millionths by visual estimate.

Possibility for M class and even x class "earth directed" activity in the next few days, depending on if she holds up as she has...
