Wow, nice catch 66! It looked earlier as if it had peaked just shy of the warning threshold. Thanks for keeping us all updated!

Moving on to our next date in our Earths rotation....

March 21 Equinox, now we are fully exposed to the center of our Galaxy with the Sun at our side, and giving us no protection from the center of the galaxy, we can expect more solar flares combined with more energy from the center of our Galaxy. This will increase immensely until we arrive at our next date in our Earths rotation....

Its going to be interesting to see the proton levels when the big brother comes in.
“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan

Why would this cause an increase in solar flares? Why didn't we see any in the years 2007, 2008,and 2009? Actually we have MORE protection from cosmic rays when the sun is active. Solar maximums expand and strengthen the heliosphere, it's during the minimums of solar activity when we see more galactic cosmic rays. Also very few gamma ray bursts have been recorded in the Milky Way itself and almost all are extra-galactic. Are you aware of recent supernovae which may have an effect on our galactic neighborhood?

Great find, Da Fuq! I found a violent little ejection from near Region 1691 (I think) at around 14:00z. Strangely, it left no trace on the x-ray flux. It's right near the Earth's magnetic footpoint, so it may add to our high proton levels.

watch and learn Hugh.......

I dont spend all day looking and listening to what NASA says....

If you were to read the thread you would understand what I am trying to tell you.......

do some research and you will see that activity did pick up in this same time frame the last few years...January to september

you were baffled back in december as to why the backside of the sun was very active only to turn quiet as those spots became earth facing......

well....now our earth is getting closer in its orbit around the sun to where the backside activity was back in december.....

but I think your mind is not open enough to see out side of your PC(box).........

no disrespect intended Hugh.....

Frank Zappa would be proud

Wowee Zowee! How did we miss that one? I saw nothing on the GONG or the x-ray flux so I figured it was backside action, but Noooooooooo......awesome filament explosion at a very high speed. Normally this wouldn't seem geoeffective, but that footpoint location has me hesitating. I'll wait for more data.

CME Arrival Due Today - Updated Hourly
Today we are awaiting the arrival of a Earth directed CME that was ejected from the solar surface on March 15, 2013. While we wait for this CME to arrive, we thought it would be a good time to update everyone with the info we have on this CME.

 Quoting: Da fuq

CME's, filaments and prominances do not register on the Xray flux chart, unless they occure in association with a solar flare event
this because they can and do occure all the time without there being any solar flare involved
the extreme solar radiated light that a sunspot gives out when a solar flare occures is the only thing the Xray monitor picks up on
i personaly watch for CMEs, filaments and prominances way more than i do for solar falres
flares are nice and exciting and all that, but it is the plasma the sun ejects at Earth in any form that is where the greatest concern should be

normaly i would say an eruption this far to the north west would not have much if any effect on Earth.
but as you pointed out Hugh, earths magnetic footprint is in just the right spot. and the CME has layed a clear path from the sun to the Earth. this allows 'stuf' to come at Earth faster and easier than normaly
this would show up 1st on the proton flux chart for GOES
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]
it is possible that this eruption added to the rise in the proton count
because were also seeing the low energy protons rise at ACE

Yeah, it is very fast and the filament liftoff occurred near Earths footprint.

Gotta wait on ISWA for the official word.
