What a great (and green) way to begin St. Patricks Day! The CME hit us in Fairbanks, Alaska right as predicted late on the evening of March 16 and, with few exceptions, kept us aurora photographers hopping all night long. The only reason I gave up around 2 a.m. is that I ran out of memory cards for my digital camera! One of the most lovely auroral shapes--the corona--occurred one after the other after the other and was one of the prettiest displays Ive seen in many years.

Another Coronal Mass Ejection
A partial halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) left the Sun on Sunday evening and is visible in both STEREO Behind COR2 and LASCO C3 imagery. The plasma cloud appears to be somewhat Earth directed. More information to follow later today. Video below.

Came across something odd on lmsal while trying to find where the C2.1 flare at 6:27 originated from, just before the GOES eclipse.

Lmsal says SR S82E14 , event #39.

[link to www.lmsal.com]

and gives us this blank reference [link to www.lmsal.com]

So I scroll up the list and find another event in a similar area S82E13, event #25

same blank reference [link to www.lmsal.com]

only this one was 2 days ago, and again during a GOES eclipse.

So what we have here is 2 C flares reported during a GOES eclipse, and reported to originate from the same inactive SR , S82E13 & 14, 2 days apart ???

Do they have additional data beyond GOES that we are not privy too, Maybe they have 14 up and running again for the eclipse ?? Are they slipping in Cs for good measure ???

If someone has some insight on this it would be great, I hate when 1+1 =5, TWICE !!! LOL

Hi TS :)

When I look at the X-Ray chart on LMSAL (topmost chart on this link) [link to www.lmsal.com] , events #25 and #39 do not seem to fall into the eclipse periods.

Am I missing something? tounge

Your right, when I was attempting to locate the origins of this blank area lmsal is referring to, I made the assumption (bad)that the SDO blackouts, just prior to both events, correlated with the GOES eclipses, which is strange in and of itself ... [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Where is this solar region that let off C2 flares on the 16th and 18th ... ??? S82E13 (which never had an official SS assigned to it) S82E14 ???

Correction on Event 25, actually #23

And I wish I had taken a screen shot of lmsal, because they now have two flares from SR S82E14 this morning (38 &39), when there was only one an hour ago .... very strange.

In general we watch the most magnetically complex regions to produce flares. That is what I was looking for originally, the next region "to watch".

I notice a pattern in the region S82E13 & 14, and all I can attribute it to is this

:31813:

Far from complex, but shooting off Cs ?? [link to halpha.nso.edu]

Of course it's possible ... but the black outs on SDO in the same time frames make it impossible to identify.
